  • Turbo problem

I have a 2000 model diesel prado, pretty standard, with 280,000 on the clock. Over the last few months, from time to time, the turbo warning light comes on, accompanied by loss of power and a rattling sound ( rather like a distributor pinging). The local dealer cant find anything wrong ( no stored error codes)
    Any suggestions?
I note that "maidmazer" had exactly the same problem some years back, but can't see that anyone replied to that post...
    Thanks in advance 😊

OK, I just had to run out to my KZJ95 and check the dash lights because in the 2000 update on the 1KZTE the "turbo" shaped warning light (I think?) changed to an "engine shaped" CEL (check engine light) so it may not be a turbo problem at all, just the ECD throwing up a fault.
Do you know that you can check the codes yourself (yeah I know, you can absolutely trust your dealer with your life/wife/left one ROFLMAO! but I just like to see for myself). Do you have the PDF manual for the engine? You simply have to jumper TE1 and E1 of the diag connector and the dash light will flash the codes up for you. The behavior you describe has happened to me when I have been slow switching tanks and starved the engine, but it threw an error code 14 in that instance.
    cheers

Youl have a loose wire somewhere... my bet it would be something to do with the timing control valve

..which SHOULD have thrown a code 14. Does the CEL stay on, and for how long? The two times it has happened to me, one reset itself after a short while at idle , but the second required pulling the ECD fuse.

Broken wire wont nessesary throw a fault code
"Soft" faults that fix themselves turn the light off

Granted, but you would hope that the logic that turned the light on would log the code too, did so in my case. I am just suggesting that I would check the codes myself rather than rely on the word of a dealership "service advisor". If it is an intermittent fault then it might be worth trying to pull the codes soon after it happens, given that it is so easy to do. I guess sooner or later it will become a hard fault and show a code..

Thanks for answering everyone...Yes, it is the engine shaped light, which my Owner's Manual says relates to a turbo problem. Given that the when the light comes on it is accompanied by a loss of power, and a rattle not usually present, I am inclined to think it must be more than a loose wire - unless an electrical fault can actually cause a turbo malfunction. I kinda assumed they were just mechanical...Light usually stays on for a few seconds - I always dip the clutch and let the revs drop to idle, and that seems to sort it out. Not ideal behaviour on the freeway though.
No I don't have the PDF manual, nor do I know where the diag connector is!! (In my defense, let me plead that I was fine with early - series I - landrover engines...). So much to learn...

A manual is discussed here, or search for 1ktze pdf manual:

                or PM me.

I would initially think fuel starvation, have you changed the fuel filter lately, checked for air leaks etc? Always do the basic/inexpensive stuff first before looking for a high tech problem, it is a pretty reliable engine overall.
