  • Aerated Diesel - Engine Not Starting?

    Guys,

Got a problem with my D4D with what looks like aerated diesel entering the main filter resulting in the engine difficult to start or idle, anyone got ideas?

600km ago I had the same problem with little or no fuel getting to the filter inlet side, coincident with faulty main tank sender unit signalling that the tank was 1/4 full when it was really empty. Had the tanks off and sender replaced, pickup was very dirty too! Filter between tanks was replaced, as with main filter in engine bay. Engine ran as expected for over 600km (road trip), but on my way home from work she konked out and the symtoms returned, priming would get her started again, but only for a short time then she'd konk out again - high rev's would keep her going though.

    Hope you can help.

    Thanks,

    Tony
    Cheers,

    Tony

Breather valve may not be working and stuck open.

Seems it may be the fuel transfer pump between the two tanks isn't pushing fuel - seems to spin though, but impellor may be jammed?

Mr T pulled the fuel tank out and connected the pump to a boosterpack and it seemed to work. Then they did the same thing with pump reinstalled using the boosterpack and it spun, but it didn't transfer any fuel.
          Cheers,

          Tony

Aux tank sender has been replaced, butI now get the feeling it was actually okay - 1/4 full gauge reading was probably fuel stuck in main tank that could'nt transfer over to the aux tank?

Truck still with Mr T, see what happens on Monday, fingers crossed as pump assembly is BIG bucks!

              Thanks for comments.

Please give us an update after you get the truck back as this is happening to me as well.
I cannot get a break with this bloody truck.

I have just been keeping fuel above 1/2 tank on 2nd tank to make sure it does not happen.

                  Hi Benny,

My Prado is still with Mr T after 3 days - both tanks dropped out (again) and seems all okay, lines clean, pickup (lifter) was clean, transfer pump runs, but may not be getting a go signal from the instrument cluster?

Trust me, I know just how you feel, so far I've replaced:

Windscreen as scratched by wipers and dust
                  Instrument cluster, temp gauge faulty
Rear brakes (shoes and drums) as handbrake not working
EGR as blocked up and unserviceable (probably related to below)
Engine with a short motor as high oil consumption due to excessive ring-to-bore ratio (blue smoke out the exhaust)
Air box as clip broken off and not sealing properly (probably the cause of above)
Clutch as difficult to reverse up slope without engaging low range (burning smell & smoke)
Clutch pedal assembly as binding and plastic bits broken off
Cultch master and slave cylinders as pedal occasionally stuck to the floor requiring a manually lift using foot under pedal (cause of above?)
Rear door rubber seal as torn
Alternator after river crossing - great place, not, to put it in a 4WD!
Aux tank sender as gauge stuck on 1/4 full

                  Other issues not yet fixed:

RHS headlight leaks water (fogs up) when it rains
Front passenger speaker not working, seems to be the head unit as cabling is fine?

I do like the car though, but seems like Toyotas aren’t like they used to be?

Toyota Service have been very understanding, which, if nothing else, makes me feel a little better - I do get a sick feeling in the stomach every time another ($$$) thing goes wrong!

                  Tony
                  Cheers,

In comparison i have had a dream run.
Thanks for the update and if you could tell me what the final problem was -if they ever find it- would be awesome.
Hope its all smooth sailing from here on for ya mate.

Oh, I nearly forgot, had to replace the driver's door as spot welding for window sliders rails came adrift -that hurt ($$$$)too!

Front axel seals replaced after heavy off road trip by No. 1 son - he paid for that!

                      Cheers,

Sounds like you have scored a lemon. I'm glad I have kept my 95 series. Have done nearly 250000 and apart from usual maintenance , have only replaced starter and water pump.

Thanks (not) for the helpful and supportive comments skulldragger - not really what this forum is about hey!

My number 1 son reckons he's found the problem/s:

                          1. Relay located near ECM behind glove box faulty, replaced and transfer pump runns continuosly whilst engine is on.

                          2. Poor earth connection in rear RHS quater panel?

Need to run her dry(ish) to seen if fixed.

                          Tony

                            Hi Tony,
Any update on how your fix went?
It happened to me again today- this time i was 1/2 full on 2nd tank.
last time 6 months ago it got down to 1/4 full on 2nd tank....
this time also could not fill up the tank -had to dribble the fuel in.
Sounds like a mix of all different problems now!
hope your fix worked for ya Tony
