  • Sand Flag Mounting

Firstly, i apologies if this topic has been covered before, I've done a search and havent come up with the info I'm looking for.

How do people mount their sand flags?

I want to mount a sand flag to my rig. I have seen people drill a hole through the flat section of thier bullbar, and screw a flag in that way, occy strapped / tied to the top rail of the bar. I have a sovereign bar, so i cant do this, as there is no flat section infront of the headlight.

Secondly, i though about using something similar to this : http://www.4x4equip.com.au/showProdu...+Flag/IDH-20-6, but there is bugger all room between the bar and the head light.

I dont have a uhf at this stage, so i thought about attaching it to the aerial tab on the bullbar. I borrowed my old mans Black Widdow 3 piece sand flag, the one with the air hose mounting fitting. I put the fitting on that tab. With two sections the flag seemed fine, with 3 it seemed to wobble and wave around alot. I didnt drive with the 3 sections on.

So my question is, what am i missing? Where do people mount them with the sovereign bar? Or is the aerial tab suitable? If so, is two sections (2m) of the flag high enough?

Hope i havent confused everyone! ops:

    Re: Sand Flag Mounting

Different bars have different stock mounting points. i have an ARB deluxe winch bar and this has two points availabel to mount a sand flag to. Secondly each sand flag as different options in how they mount. Mine is a Black Window Mine Whip three peice flag with snap on air fittings. I forget the bolt size but it is perfect for the ARB bar. My father inlaw has a flag purchased from ARB and the standard fitting is much smaller and does not fit the ARB bar.

If you have a Genuine Toyota alloy bar then I think you will be drilling holes but could be mistaken as I think there may be a single tab that could be used.Annother option would be to use a bolt on fitting used to support a UHF aerial.

The black widow / minewhip air snap fitting is the one I'm using at the moment.

Do you run all three sections, or do you find two is enough?

        Re: Sand Flag Mounting

If I have a flag on then it's with all three sections but I have a solid ARB that it is mounted to. I've used it across the Simpson and down at Robe a number of times. Wouldn't go with anything less than 3m just to make things safe but if you are in a convoy and you are in the middle then two would be fine except when on the beach where there is the possibility that you just head off by yourself, then you need three. Lead car should get as much height as possible but then you need to consider the effetive weight on the mount and the mounts ability to support that weight.

A simple and cheap way is if you have roof racks just mount and old 27 mhz cb antenna [mine is 1.2m] on top of the racks with a suitable bracket. Attach flag to top. Your starting point is close to 2m . Neil

I'm still trying to wokr out the best way to mount mine onto Soverign Bar too... Cant use the standard mount point as I have UHF ariel there. I tried a mounting point I had from previous car (just to the inside of the factory mount on the flat centre rail), bolted it on and it looked awesome. Problem solved or so I thought Spent the New years weekend at Wedge Island with no problems until it came time to air up and head home. Out came the compressor, popped the bonnet and s#!t... big plastic bit hits the mounting... luckily enough there was enough room to just slide a hand in a clip on the compressor leads...

Still thinking and trying to work it out... be interested too see other ppls solutions!

                  Re: Sand Flag Mounting

Damo - I had this same problem. I have the sovereign bar and we were down at robe recently. I made my own two piece flag out of conduit. It cost me $8. I could not bring myself to spend 100 on a fiberglass one. Anyway, I had an issue with where to store it on this bar as I have a UHF aerial. I bought two stainless-steel adjustable pipe clamps from bunning for $1 odd each. I then mounted the flag on the upright bar section next to the front head-light. took about 2 minutes to put on and 2 to take off. So, a tad slower than the bought ones. But, you either have to do something like this, use the aerial tab, or buy another aerial mount for 20 odd dollars. Hardly worth it IMO.

You can see the clamp in the first pic, which i've zoomed. The second shows the angle it sits on when up, as the bar is not completely vertical. Still achieves the desired aim though.

Thanks Ian. Mounting it on the side like that is a good idea.

                      Re: Sand Flag Mounting

How do you go with the flexing of the conduit Ian?
I was thinking about using of a 1/2 length of conduit myself, and aslo thought about shoving a stick of hardwood dowel up the guts to give it more strength.

That looks like a chaep and simple idea to mount the flag to the outer upright of the bar. I will steal that idea off you, if you don't mind.

                        Re: Sand Flag Mounting

Davros - the sand flag bends really well. I actually made it 3 piece but it was too long, and 2 piece is sufficient.

Go to bunnings. Get 2 lengths of cheap conduit (they were about 4$ each and 4 metres each length). One is 16mm and the other is 22mm. You will have a fair bit of conduit left over, probably enough to make 2 flags in total.

Anyway, cut a piece of 22mm conduit, at about 1.4 metres. Put it aside.
With the 16mm conduit, you'll notice one end is flared to enable you to join it to another length of 16mm. You need to keep this in tact. So, cut 1.5 meters off either end. Pass the end that doesn't have the flare on it through the 22mm piece that you cut. It should stick out by about 100mm. The other piece of 1.5 is what you attach to the top of this using the flared end. So, it's a 2 piece pole.

The 22mm with 16mm inside gives it strength. You need to permanently join these together. I used PVC glue and a small bolt with a nyloc nut about half way. The other 16mm piece just goes on as needed and is flexible and doesn't break when you hit stuff. You also need to drill a hole right the 16mm pieces where they join (i.e., through the flange). Then just use a butterfly nut to join these, otherwise, it just flexes and falls off from the vibrations after a few hours driving (trust me, i've field tested it ;-) ).

Of note, you can leave the lower half on the bullbar if travelling on highways. I did this for 2 days in a row at 100kmh no prob. I just put the top bit on when we hit the dunes. When it's time to go home though, I took it off.

If I haven't made any sense or you need pics, just let me know.

Thank you very much Ian for that detailed explanation.
I was wanting to avoid using my brothers suggestion.... (just whack a flag on top of the 6.5bd antenna), but didn't want to spend too much loot.
Your way of getting the job done sounds like the ticket to me.

                              Thanks again.
