FJBruisers host PPer on their MudFling - Day 1

Greetings, I have returned and bring good tidings from our USA cousins; the FjBrusiers :). Many of you are already aware of Ben's (FlyNDrive) involvement in PradoPoint. I had a rare opportunity to wheel with Ben at an FjBruiser GTG. Here is the report.

This is the 1st installment of FJBruisers host PPer on their MudFling.

The FJBruisers hold a major annual event and it just so happened that I was in the area (more or less). This year's event was the MudFling, held in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia over the USA Memorial Day long weekend (24-26 May). Approximately 40 vehicles (and a tag-along gypsy - me) attended this year's event.

The FjBruisers do it in style with all the trimmings of a well organised group:

First things first... Many thanks to the FJBruisers MudFling attendees for hosting me on what has been a trip of a lifetime. Especially, a huge thanks to FlyNDrive and his lovely wife who have raised the bar in hospitality. I am in your debt.

There are so many angles to report on... these sort of trips are as much about relationships as the 4-Wheeling (as they say in USA). So, I will try to touch on both here. I'll also try to avoid rambling... too much :)

This is part 1 of a 3 (or will it be 4?) part trip report.

After flying into Shenandoah Valley in a small turbo-prop plane, I soon spotted Josh waiting by his impressive looking FJCruiser - Josh was my transport to the KOA campground, where the FJBruisers were mostly based.

Never having met Josh, or any other FJBruisers for that matter, it was encouraging how well we hit it off. I got a great feeling about this, right from the get go.

After a quick meet and greet with the other FJBurisers, several of them helped me erect my tent (kindly supplied by FlyNDrive) - large enough for a family of 5.

The team leaders had already taken a drive to scout out the various runs. That night was a quick team meeting over a dimming flashlight (torch) and ample amber fluid, followed by some envelope stuffing (sic).

The weather was perfect - the nights were cold and the days were cool. It immediately struck me just how much organising had gone into this event. From obtaining sponsorship, raffle prizes, trail maps, banners, waivers, support from Toyota Trail Team, lunch supplied, and so on and on. By 9am many of the FJBruisers were lined up to collect their stuffed envelopes and register for the event.

Using a picnic ground as a base, many trails were easily accessed, all just few miles (kms :)) apart. The members reviewed the maps and signed up for one or two of the trail runs; typically, one run before lunch and another after lunch. The trails were rated from Easy to Expert.

Also interesting was the Trail Leader and Tail Gunner deco which was magnetically afixed. They know how to do things right!a

I rode shotgun in FlyNDrive's incredibly well decked-out beast. He also generously put me in the driver's seat for what made an awesome day, as did Andrew and the Toyota Trails Team. We headed to Dry River Run (which was everything but dry!). What a great way to start... water crossings! After lunch, we conquered a more technically challenging trail, called Dictum Ridge. Way too many pictures to choose from, but here's a selection:

The one below shows what happens when A-TRAC (traction control) is disabled. The FjCruisers have a switch to select this. Once the driver realised, he simply pressed the A-TRAC button and simply crawled from the mud bath.

Lunch was provided and cooked by the sponsors. What a good deal! They also raffled off (Chinese Auction style) a number of prizes kindly donated by their sponsors.

Embarrissingly, your's truly won a few too many prizes... I must report that I tracked down the Staun guages that were somehow exported to USA and managed to win them back - now safely returning them to Australia :)

During the Dry River run, FlyNDrive was noticing a strange knocking. Back at the campsite, a bush repair was needed to replace the bolt in the upper-link. Some nice airbag work.

There's some amazing organisation going on there .... and what looks like a fantastic group of people.

Does it give us a few ideas for some of our own trips ...... you betcha :lol: :lol: :lol:

Excellent stuff there LF&R, Chippy Ben has graciously offered his assistance with helping us out with the PP GTG. He has a lot of experience in organising large events.

You'd have to be thinking ...... that if we can get this sort of international cooperation happening ....... then Toyota would want to get on board and ride some of the publicity. :?: :?: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Great to have Ben on board ..... without casting any doubts on you and Stan's abilities to get this together.

The FJ looks like a amazing car and superior to the Prado.( Did I say that)
It looks more like a cross between a Landcruiser and Prado.

LF&R Good writeup. I couldn't of done better myself.

It was a great weekend. I wish I could of personally meet LF&R at the airport, but there were pre-runs to be made and a schedule to be kept.

When I did meet up with him in the middle of raising the tent I affectionately call the Taj Mahal we became fast friends. Matt brought me a genuine reproduction Aussie Army Slouch hat that I have been wanting for years (I think there is a picture out there somewhere).

It was a busy evening before the start of the event, so social hour was short lived and as we got to work. LF&R joined the group for the event meeting and even stayed behind to help stuff the event envelopes with wavers, advertisements, and stickers after others have slipped away to enjoy the campfire and smores. He finally got to socialize when I dismissed myself to plan trail leaders with the Toyota Trails Team.

The Toyota Trail Teams was established by Toyota and a marketing group to send out several experienced drivers with Toyota FJ Cruisers to show the abilities (and limitations) of the vehicle. There are 3-4 teams that travel across the US, showing up at events to teach classes, trail ride with us FJ owners, and promote the vehicle (COo.oOLest job ever). They take a lot of photos that can be downloaded from the site and give out promotional materials we affectionately call SWAG. This years swag included a Trail Teams grill badge (highly sought after and going for a fortune on eBay), a collapsible shovel, a cleaver map case, a trucker hat, and DVD's. Past items have included a watch, camel-back, tool bags, multi tools, and other cool stuff.

I hope Toyota can send something like them to the GTG next year.

I was a trail leader on all the trails, so when things were running well I was able to let LF&R take the wheel. My FJ is kind of indestructible (except for the up[per link.....and transmission breathers), so I didnt mind, but after a moment behind the wheel I was put at ease that this PP'er actually knew what he was doing, but he did drive on the wrong side of the trail at some times (JK).

This is a nice easy trail with about 8 water crossings and some were kinda of deep. I was able to test out the snorkel fully, but also found out the FJ floats in deep water. After each pass I got the courage to go a little deeper and after Evey pass i had to find a steep bank to drain out water from the floorboard. I even let LF&R drive through the deep stuff.

LF&R was quick to notice that the creek bed was almost a solid floor of small stones. He mentioned that most of the rivers on the west coast of OZ were soft sand or mud, and this river seemed easy to drive over.

We broke for lunch and headed back to the pavilion at Riven Rock Park. Lunch was provided by 4X4Conection (a local vendor I spend most of my money with) and some social time. We had a little raffle that some Oz that will remain nameless won a good chunk of the prizes. After that we headed out onto the trail.

Second Trail Run was Kephart Run

This is a nice little trail that winds around a small creek and his quite picturesque. It is somewhat easy, but has some twists and turns that you need to watch for pin striping. As we wheeled along there was a clunk every time the suspension flexed fully. We isolated the problem as an upper link bolt that backed out (shoddy mechanic), Since there was no harm to the vehicle we reached the turn around at the end and reversed direction, so I let LF&R drive the trail back.

We headed back to the campground and repaired the bolt so i can wheel Dictum Ridge on Day 2.

Matt was a great guest and contributor to the event. There was no one who left the event without having a new lifelong friend. I could hear everyone saying under their breath, "I hope everyone 'down there' is like that." He made a good impression for PP and a great ambassador for Australia.

Stay tuned for more, but you as a teaser........Matt, I think they are just going to total Nathans FJ (I call dibs on the light bar).
