  • Fixing KDSS lean after lift query..

Now that my lift has been done my 15mm factory lean has become about a 20mm lean (higher on passenger side). My question is can I adjust the drivers front Bilstein cir-clip to raise that side 10mm as both front bilstein cir-clips are in the centre position ?

Hmmmm seems I may be the giunea pig here ....I have booked my car in to have the front right strut adjusted to a higher setting to the passenger side (about 10mm) and I'll see how that go's. It nay not eliminate the lean but could bring it back to about 5-10mm which I can live with.

to my way of thinking setting up your shocks for different sides is one of those masking tape solutions.

The only experience i have had with a kdss imbalance was with my brother in laws 200 series... he used the air bags to set it up evenly when i found out i took it to work, and tried a few things.

the best thing i got to work was the following.

Two guys on the passengers side (lean was around 20mm down drivers side worst front corner)sitting on the edge of the seats facing out . Undid the kdss valves and the measured there was a slight lean to the pasengers side. Retightened valves after a few minutes.... the imbalance once they got out was around 5mm down to the drivers side. Yep that easy to 'adjust them'

Its a shit system and the very first time you take it out into the bush and park it on a rock for a period of time it will be out.

Its the best i was been able to get it at the time but i didnt muck around too much, although i will be taking it to the workshop on monday so it will be interesting to see what the height differences are

the last thing i would do is try to reset the imbalance by having your shocks set differently side to side...up to you though

Fair call it makes sense. Now to find the valves in a prado??I'm sure there is a thread somewhere lol. Thanks for the advice mate.

Post #67 in Rogerthat's buildup thread, Shniff says that he uses this solution to the KDSS lean. Don't know if the VX is the same as the Kakadu though.

Darren the spacer should fix it, just go in at half the height that it is out as I learnt the hard way. In regards to it being a 'shit' system, I happen to like it heaps, yes the lean was a pain but once sorted it works great. The body roll into corners is barely noticeable compared to my mates GXL and the off road ability is incredible. Just my 2 cents.

100% agree....I'm a huge fan of the KDSS like you say on road is VERY competent very comfortable but after spending most of today four wheeln in the bush the KDSS shines even brighter. I also loved how well the new Bilsteins and front lovells worked off road and soaking up bumps. I'm going to book the car in to have the drivers front strut set 10mm higher than the passenger then I'm all good.

Can you keep us posted on the outcome of the change. My concern is that the lean seems to be different depending on the slope of the terrain etc. Will making a change in height on one side do the trick?

                      Hi All,
We swapped out some factory rear bags for our longer ones on a Kakadu yesterday, and found that the KDSS system did not need any adjustement, however it is a direct axting hydrailus system is would be easilty prone to not returning to exastly the same position after each movement. Also, the airbag controls complicate this as they do not attempt to level the car when the igintion is turned off, resulting in out of level when parked. I would suggest you check for a consistent lean when stopped before attempting to trim the front end; when this is OK then adjust the valve (located under LHS sill, midships) to get it closer. If aibag sensor heights have been adjusted then these may need to be correct at the same time.
                      Hope this helps, Airbag Man.

Thanks for the reply mine is always down on the drivers side when I stop (approx 20mm) but not sure if its level when the car is on ? I will check that. I don't mind if it leans only when the car is parked I can live with that. I was wondering where the the valve was located so thanks for that as well. How do you adjust the valve under the left hand sill is it just a matter of bleeding it to sit the car level or when the car is level bleed it ?

Im keen to hear more about your replacement bags as well so keep me posted please...
                        Cheers

As far as we know, you can open it up, level the car, then do it up again, and it should stay put.

Hi Darren, even though mine is only a VX I have tried and tried to level the system, as have many others with a VX and 200. The 200 we could level with not much issue but the Prado from some reason would not play the game. At my previous place of employment we had a few VX's come through and all had the same issue. I was not happy about fitting the spacer but it was a last resort after 3 months of trying to level it by undoing the screws (its not so simple as open it up either as you do not want to undo them to far or else you will loose fluid as well), rocking the car side to side and front to back, driving it around the block, rocking it again and then doing up the screws. Still no luck. The only fix that I was successful with (as are TJM and ARB) was the spacer in the front drivers side.
