Hi guys im looking at getting an exhaust systeme for my prado, hasnt even done 10,000km yet however the low down lack of power and drone are starting to get annoying even this early in its life. Im looking at biting the bullet and buying a full system but im not sure what size to get or what brand, i hear a 3" is almost too big and u could actually lose power? i was looking at beadesert exhaust, getting it sent to me and ill put it in myself. thoughts?

Ivano, Mate as you are in Darwin I would recomend you talk to PtnLinda from here as he just had an exhaust fitted. He has done the looking around already and could give you some advice.

      SOL.

Well, finally bit the bullet and got the Beaudesert 2.75"

To be honest, there is definitely an improvement - I am not entirely convinced it was worth the total sum of money spent...... I didnt tell the Mrs - hoping to surprise her but I am thinking maybe she wont even notice the difference.

Perhaps I should have gone 3" afterall. I guess all the comments about torque loss scared me off....

It seems to spool maybe a little better low down - it got rid of a bit of resonance noise. Apart from shutting it down, and hearing the turbo spool a bit more when revved with the door open, I don't really notice much of a tone difference at all.

I kept the old system so I can always rip this one off before I sell it off....

I have a slight vibration from it if laboured, so need to go back to have it looked at....

I know this might be a PP sin with a bit of 120 - 150 cross breading, but would the high flow muffler change out on the 1KZ engine in my 120 series still give good results?

I have currently be weighing up if I would put in a 3" exhaust and chip in my current prado or trade the 120 in for a 150. But now I hear about just doing the muffler and the difference it makes I think its worth trying out.

Does anyone have the model number of a lukey muffler that fits best to replace the big standard one?

Had the muffler replaced today with a glass packed straight through, Stainless. This was done at Hi-Tech Exhausts in Darlinghurst Sydney.
$400...not cheap, not fussed! These mufflers are made in there shop and used on the NSW ambulances. Great advise and service for any interested parties..

                  So:
Performance- noticeable power increase but what was certainly more noticeable was the much smoother and more responsive
gear change. Quicker of the mark for sure, responds better to a boot full. I was impressed as I really didn't believe I'd notice anything! The staff assured me it would and that they'd replace with the old one at no charge if I wasn't happy. Not to mention it's half the size of the original! (gotta be a small bonus in that)

Noise: Not much different! A little more whistle which I like anyway!

                    • Been following this thread with interest for a while now especially the muffler change out rather than the full exhaust with some saying it was a great idea and some saying ahhhh! I finally bit the bullet and decided to do the muffler about a month back. Had a steel Redback fitted (don't like stainless. Cracks to easy) at the local "fast fit exhaust" and can't believe the difference. Power is up a bit and she picks up easier off the mark. Quicker than me mates brand newie. I work away at the mines so on the highway to and from work was where I was looking for an improvement. Half way through overtaking road trains is not a good time to find you need more go. The pick up North of 90-100kph is much better and makes getting around them much less hairy. Might only make a couple of seconds difference but that can be huge if the road ahead suddenly gets crowded. The biggest improvement though is in my fuel economy. Its made a massive difference when towing or cruising. With the boat on the back I've dropped from just under 16/100 to 14.2/100 (t'ville to Cairns) and have just done the same trip again without the boat and averaged 8.4/100 on the way up and 8.8 on the way back. It wasn't that good brand new and naked.

I also remove my roof rack, awning, water tank when not in use. Have modified it so the whole setup is only held on by 6 eye bolts so only a 10 min job and nearly a litre/100 difference.

AND they only charged me $160 fitted.

Thanks for the reminder to TDPRADO. Better go and do me uni's

                          • I have read this thread, and am confused by those that say that a wider exhaust will create less back pressure (true) but that will lower torque.

In a turbo, lowering back pressure ie behind the turbo exhaust - will allow the turbo to spin faster, hence increasing torque, since the turbo will operate at higher RPMs hence pushing in more air into the motor.

However ... how does the diesel know how much fuel to push into the motor? EFI system often read the air flow going into the motor ... does the D4D sence the air flow into the motor? I presume it must, hence why a D4D operates well in high altitudes.

                            • This is a most confusing subject, someone who actually knows and could summarize this exhaust issue once and for all would be gold.

i recently - last week put a 3 inch MANTA exhaust on my Prado GXL 2014 D4D, noticed a faster spool of turbo, and the wife can know keep the Prado at 7.8 L per hundred, driving in rural suburbia. Previously at 8.5 so win there, however a little bit of a lower drone has been noticed.

From my readings - circa 2012 - 3" exhausts were having some clearance problems with the rear suspension. I presume by now those problems have been resolved. I suspect I will just do the muffler and perhaps the cat. But if that approaches a full exhaust cost ... then I'll have to think again! I would have like the ECU optimized too, but it seems its not done unless you chip the vehicle. I think chipping will effect my warranty ...

More importantly I will put in an oil catch can ... I'd like to do both together. They seem a no brainer. Annoying that Toyota don't filter out all the goo that gets recycled back to the inlet system. I am approaching 21K now and suspect the inlet system has a significant coating already.
