  • OME Suspension Upgrade

    Hi all,

went today to inspect my car and get a couple of things out of it as it's still at the panel beaters. I saw that they had taken the chassis off the body (sight to see, will post pics soon - refer to my build up thread for why it's at the panel beaters) and asked them if they would fit different springs with no labour costs. Since they've already got the car to bits they agreed.

Now, the problem is, that I had soft fronts and medium backs installed, and it simply does not give me enough clearance (20mm more than standard).

I'm thinking of getting Heavy duty installed front and rear to get the extra clearance.
Now as far as weight is concerned, at the front there is an alloy bar, with spotties and antenna, and will soon be getting dual battery and maybe a winch, at the back it will be receiving drawers + fridge.
Am I going overboard with the Heavy Duty springs, and is it going to make the vehicle noticeably rougher or is it more than a good trade off for the extra clearance?

I can't comment from experience on the Prado but I did do a similar thing on my old Patrol.

When I first put the OME suspension in it was fairly standard, once I added a roof rack, drawers etc and loaded it up I found that it was a bit low at the back so I swapped the medium rear springs for hard. Once done it drove much better when loaded and had a lot more clearence. It was slightly bumpier when empty but it just made the car bounce around a bit more on undulating roads, I didn;t find it rough.

Overall I think the change was definately worth it and I'm considering doing the same on the Prado.

I'm running the 884 Spring, Front and 896, Rear. All the medium gear.
ARB Steel Bar, spots lights etc, no 2nd Battery up front or Winch.
I wouldn't want anything heavier than this upfront.

The rears could do with maybe airbags looking back, as the 896 springs drop a little in rear end when loaded up with all the camp gear plus stuff on the roof.
I do have a home made set of drawers in back with gear in them all the time, so this why I went for the firmer shock also and medium spring for the constant load.

Normally she sits quite level unloaded. With enough clearance up front. My front clearance doesn't really change at all in ride height even when loaded.

      cheers

Spoke to a couple of mates of mine and they've all told me to steer clear of the heavy duty springs unless I've got a very loaded car (which I don't).
So I've just ordered medium springs for the front (upgrading from soft) and leaving the backs as they are.

They told me some real horror stories about people they know going down my way of thinking and getting their kidneys shaken loose as the suspenion was way too hard on a 'lightly loaded' car.

        Hope it works out well.

I am about to upgrade mine with OME Sport shocks and was going down the heavy spring path. When I go bush it is heavily loaded.

So overall what's the opinions? heavy duty not a good choice?

The front springs all have the same rate, only the length varies, so the ride should be the same regardless of the front spring you choose only the ride hieght will alter depending on what accesories you have. Rear springs are a different story.

I have the 885 (heavy) front springs with steel bar and winch and they are fine, I have the medium rear with polyair bags to assist in the rear, I have a full floor to ceiling storage system, second battery in the rear and fridge permanently mounted along with full tool kit and recovery gear always on board. I find this combo works well.

Have a look here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread....&daysprune=-1 for the specs on the springs.

            Cheers Andrew

I have had the heavy duty springs on the rear of my previoud 120 Prado. Great for load carrying, however no good on corrugations when not loaded (expect the rear end to go very sideways - quite dangerous).
Now have medium duty all round, have steel bar, winch, batteries up front. the rear end is too low and when loaded bottoms out on any small dip. Fitted spacers, however this made the handling crap so will be taking them out. What I need is longer springs with a rate between the medium and heavy duty.
                Any suggestions?

Lighter rear springs with airbags, that will fix it, just pump up the bags when youve got a load

Will the airbags affect full compression of the springs?

Dropped off the medium duty front springs at the repair guys this morning. Going to get the old ones back. They're the light duty OME Coils with about 4000km on them. Do you guys think I could sell them on or is it one of those things no one will be interested in? Also, you guys got any suggestions on what they'd be worth with 4000km on them?

Placed my order for my OME suspension yesterday. Was going the path of heavy springs front with mediums rear. They would not let me get the heavy front...said it was too stiff for an alloy bar no winch even with second battery. Oddly enough they were kind of leaning toward heavy on the rear when I said I rent a Kimberly from time to time but I went with the mediums.

I think I'll be happy and if the springs appear light on in the rear I can also add some bags later.

Went and enquired about upgarding the suspension today. I tried to give them as much information as I could with what I already have mounted to the Prado and what it is used for. We discussed a few things and mentioned a couple of things I have read on here and this is what has been recommended.
Front springs- 2884 (Alloy bar, second battery)
                              Front strut- 90000
Rear springs- 2896 (No permenant load)
                              Rear shock- 60004

After re-reading a few posts on here again and weighing up opinions I think this is the way I will go. If the back does sag to much when fully loaded and camper attached I still have the option to install poly airs.
