  • Spare tyre carrier spacer.

Not sure if this is the right spot but here goes.
Just got a set of 265/70/17 BF goody All terrains. As expected the spare will not fit on the carrier without spacing it out from the door. :?

    How have people done this?
Is it better to space the whole carrier out from the door or to put a spacer between the wheel and the carrier, or a bit of both?

As an aside, after I removed the black cover thingy I noticed it had been rubbing on the paint of the door. Any one else seen this?

G'day Strathan, I had some scuffing of the paint on back door. Don't know if it was before or after I fitted my 265/65 Cooper ATR's but I just got nine half inch flat washers from Bunnings and put them on the lugs on the spare until the tire wasn't pushing the black plastic thingy onto the door. Found three washers on each lug did the trick.

Been covered a few times here before, Search button brought this up:

        http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php ... eel+spacer

There is a few other threads with details in them as well.

Darren from ATS has spacer plates and Total Traction tyres in Sa does as well.

I got a set of spacers from Total Traction Tyres in Lonsdale, SA.
The spacers sit between the door and the original bracket and are designed to spread the load accross more of the door rather than point loading it.
$55 + postage for the two spacers and 4 longer bolts.

I made up some spacers out of some aluminum round stock. drilled the center on the lathe.

I can't remember the exact measurements, i think it was around 15 - 10 mm each. placed behind the wheel carrier on some longer hi-tensile metric fine bolts.

I still have some of the round stock left and i think i might be able to find the test one somewhere. If you want me to make you some i could do it next week and send them to you bryce.

Cheers Damien, do you put your spacers between the door and carrier, or carrier and wheel?
Spacing out the carrier would seem to put leverage on the mounting bolts?
Am I being a bit to concerned?

im concerned about mine, when i get some time, im going to take it all off the back and have a really good look at the best way of doing it. im also considering an actual rear wheel carrier as well to ease up on the load on the back door.

I am using nylon washers on the studs for the 265/70 STT as I don't need them with the original wheels. Lately I have 3x3mm thick washers on the top two studs and 4x3mm on the bottom as the plastic was still rubbing paint.
In western China last year I saw several 4WDs with brackets from the bumper/towbar to provide support through a spring or rubber block under the spare on the door. Unfortunately I didn't get any photos. The seemed to have a lever to release before opening the door. I've been wondering about doing something like it, perhaps an air actuator when I get a locker and have air available. A designed lift of about 20 kgf should be enough.

I put mine between the carrier and the door.

I would imagine that there would be some small increase in the leverage force, however it would be the same resultant if you were to pack out the studs on the carrier. Your still moving the mass away from the mount on the door either way.

I would imagine that problems would arise if there was a difference in size between spacers.

I have had mine on for the last 18 mths and all appears to be fine. There are others out there that have had them on for longer than that and have had no trouble.

Just let me know if you want them and i will get cracking on them next week.

Its a bit of a pain to take the spare and the carrier off to clean behind it ... but well worth it .... the amount of crap that builds up there and attacks the paintwork is significant.

I also had the good fortune to borrow a set of MTZs, on play rims, to try out and see if that's what I wanted to buy next. That meant the spare wouldn't fit on the carrier any more .... so after having a read through this thread and this one http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic....e+wheel+spacer I set about knocking up a solution.

I also discovered that the existing spare had been rubbing at the paint as well ... something I would like to avoid.

I also preferred the idea of a spacer between the carrier and the door ... over washers on the studs .... and I liked Leachy's spacers .. that spread the load over more of the surface area rather than point loading.

Whether the spare is spaced away with washers or another form of spacer between the carrier and the door .. the weight is still being moved further away ... so the extra load on the bolts should be similar either way.

Ando's idea of the chopping board was a great one. Everyone's got an old nylon chopping board sitting in the shed. I traced around the shape of the carrier and took to the board with a jigsaw, then drilled a couple of holes.

Sourced 4 longer bolts, washers and spring washers.

... and fitted the spacers ...

Clearance doesn't seem to be an issue any more

I've left the plastic mud catcher off, for now, to see how much of a difference it makes.

                      Cheers

As always Chippy, a most excellent illustrative description, an in my circumstances, perfect timing. I am getting some muddies fitted tomorrow morning and I was wondering how the "bigger" tyre will fit.

Now I have to get up that little bit earlier in the morning and sabotage the chopping board before the wife wakes up and wants to butter her toast ! :P  :P

                        Love your work!

Ok , all done nearly , i made up 17mm thick and 35mm diameter PTFE washers x 4 . i was ready to stick them on and then i realised that the threads on the bolts that need to be replaced are ???? imperial ?

chippy you had done the mod so you could possibly help ?

i will take a run to bunnings tomorrow and get them

the bolt length/tread/size would be good .

                            thanks

                              G'day Billy

From memory ... M10 bolts ... the originals were about 25 mm long. The replacements I have used are 40 mm .. but then my spacer is only 12 mm thick.

The little bit of extra length gave me room for a flat washer and spring washer on each bolt.

                              Cheers
