  • Rear Bar & Wheel Carrier

Nearly finished installation of a "Strongarm" rear bar and wheel carrier. It has not been without dramas, which I will list in a subsequent post.

Luckily I have an engineering workshop and have been able to make modifications easily.

It is a reasonably well made unit with very sturdy wheel carriers (on axle stubs with bearings), LED tail/brake & indicators, hi-lift jack sockets on each corner and tow points. I also have a light pole, jerry can holder and hi-lift jack bracket. The covers for the corners are fibreglass and are shaped quite well, but poorly painted and need trimming to fit properly.

This setup cost around $4k fitted

Here are the latest pictures - only things left to do are "adjust" and fit the corner covers and wire up the reversing / work light. Also need to get another wheel!

Just about finished. Wired up the reverse/work light last night. It is setup to come on with reversing lights and also has a switch in the front to turn it on at other times.

The machine is a bit dirty as I had a call-out in the snow yesterday. Will post some final pictures with a clean machine soon!

The box it arrived in claimed the whole package weighed 115 kg. Take off about 10 kg for the box and packaging and another 5-10 kg for the bits that came off and you've got an extra 100 kg or so.

I guess it is a trade off - with this setup you are keeping the weight of the 2nd spare, jerry can and hi-lift jack down low rather than on a roof rack.

            Hi Matthew.

Could you please post a larger picture of your avatar. I would love to see how the bar looks all fitted.

            Cheers,

            Paul.

My avatar photo is pre rear bar :?

Photos a few posts above are the best I have at the moment. Waiting on the hi-lift jack carrier, then will clean the vehicle and take some photos to show everything. Should be early next week.

                Bugger, so it is. ops:

I wondered why I could not see the tyre carrier on the right... I was actually thinking that they had formed the section running towards the rear wheels very nicely, that's why I asked.

                  Coming along nicely.

Id love to have one of those just to keep the weight of the LT tyre off the rear door.
One thing that I had allways thought about the rear bar like this on a prado is.,
will that bar move around as much as the front bar.?

The cab is rubber mounted and the bar is solid to the chassis.
Standard rear bumper is plastic and mounted to the body.
Could this bar bounce/ shake like the front bullbars do and hit the panels?

You have seen how this rearbar goes on, how much clearnce do they give around panels etc?
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

                    Jeff s,

The rear bar does move wrt the cab, but I suspect not as much as the front. The clearance to body on the corner covers is the same as the plastic bar was and I tested movement by hi-lift jacking the rear corner off the ground. The new corner cover only just touched the body when lifted, which should be a worst case situation. I haven't driven much with it on yet, so will monitor it and see how it goes.

                        Matthew,
I know this is an old post, however, I was wondering if you have come a cropper with the position of your number plate. My viewing of the locking handles of the rear bar indicate that they protrude onto the number plate from both the left and right obscuring tha first and last letters. I would imagine that the RTA would frown of this as would some authorities interstate. Any probs so far?
