  • Product Review: Belkin 300w Inverter

Here is my first of many planned product reviews of accessories and gadgets related to our Toyotas.

Product: Belkin AC Anywhere 300 Watt Inverter. Part # F5C412au300W
    Price: $99 from Harvey Norman

I used to work in the remote power industry and I sold thousands of inverters. During this time I noted that there are many different levels of quality out there.

A recent trip saw me charging my laptop between campsites via an inverter in the vehicle. I used one of the cheapo 75 watt devices I used to sell in my shop. It couldn't handle my laptop and started to melt (literally). So I decided it was time for a better inverter. Searching through some wholesale lists revealed the same generic Chinese stuff I used to sell. All with a maximum 12 months warranty. eBay wasn't much better with similar offerings. Then I visited Harvey Norman at McGraths Hill (Windosor) and they had these these Belkin devices on the shelf with a two year warranty!

A quick search of the 'net revealed that I'd be struggling to get one delivered for much less than the $99 asking price, so I went back and gave the card a swipe.

Here is the device, as seen on Belkin's website:

    Details are available here.

The unit powers my power hungry 3.2GHz P4 laptop without a problem with the Toyota's engine running. It struggles once the engine has been off for a while.

I took it into my study (lab). I'm an Electronics Technical Officer for a living and it used to be my main hobby so I've got a fully equipped service bench at home, with CROs, power supplies, Fluke Multimeters and stuff.

Running the inverter from my 30A variable lab power supply reveals that it is indeed one tough little beast. As I type this I'm powering the laptop from the inverter with the power supply set to 12.0 volts. It's humming away nicely, not even getting warm. Years of electronics has taught me that excessive heat in appliances like these is your enemy and an indication of poor design. Not the case with this unit though.

So why isn't it happy running the lappy in the Toyota without the engine running? Easy. On the lab power supply the inverter is drawing and average of 13 amps. That's quite a load for the piddling standard wiring in the cigar lighter circuit of the vehicle, and the subsequent voltage drop is enough to cause the inverter to go into an undervolt shut down. Will be easily fixed when I install a decent power feed from my auxiliary battery using decent cable. Besides, at 13 amps, I'm not interested in running the lappy for ages off the vehicles main accessories circuit for any length of time without the engine running anyway.

Time will tell if this product stands up to the rigors of life "on the road", but so far things are looking good.

    Hope someone find this helpful.

Next review to follow: Should you consider buying a Chinese winch?

    Cheers,

    Drew.

i've been looking to get one of these for a while! good to hear there are some out there that are decent at a not to offensive price!! Have had a lot of good experiences with Belkin also!

Was it on sale or anything like that or normal price?

It appears to be the normal price. They have only just been launched.

I need one too.. thanks for the write-up.

Actually, I have another question.... my camper has what I think might be a 12V plug (I ordered one and that the only thing I can't identify!) but it's a funny thing... pins look something like |- Since this inverter has a ciggerette lighter fitting, can I get a convertor to my plug, or do I have to make one up? If I make one up, should I also replace the cable with something beefier? I will generally just want to run the invertor in the car, but there may be an occasion that I want to run it from the camper battery.

          Good question HG,

There are no adapters available AFAIK, but they are easily made. The compatible plug is available from Clipsal, see your local electrical wholesaler. They aren't all that cheap but are worth it as they work very well.

I've got one of those DC sockets in my Jayco, I haven't had a decent look at the quality of the wiring yet. Finishing the electrics/solar power in the camper trailer is another job on my list. Too many hobbies - not enough time.

Before you connect anything to that Clipsal socket just check the polarity (I guess with your background you would anyway).
It is fairly common with some of the mass produced vans that they come from the factory reversed.

Nice review. Good to see Belkin's quality taking a turn for the better.

I have had a lot of Belkin stuff for my Mac and have found it all to be cr@p. That's why I stopped buying Belkin.

With this review, I may be tempted to give them another go.

                  Hi Drew

How clean does the sine wave look (or is it more like a square wave) on your CRO?

Are you able to check it both unloaded and under load?

                  Thanks

                    G'day BLW,

I haven't bothered connecting it to my CRO yet, haven't had time. It is a square wave inverter so some appliances make a bit of a buzz when plugged in. The items I've used in it so far aren't getting any warmer than usual which suggests the output is fairly clean for a square wave.

                    Drew.

I was just thinking about that today. I don't know if I'll get time before the holidays - something will show up eventually. :-)

                            Well done Drew.

We bought a 300W inverter from Dick Smith.
Marked as Dicks but probably made elsewhere.

It comes with 2 power leads. One car ciggy lighter socket, and the other clamps for battery terminals and the like.

The manual said something about if the equipment your using is over 120W use the clamps.
And if you look at the 12V outlet in your Prado centre console it has 120W on the cover. So fair call there.

We have a hot dog cooker that we now take camping. Top idea. uses less than 100mls of water.
It said on the bottom 300W. Beautiful. When we run the hot dog cooker an internal fan kicks on inside the inverter, and so it should, We are at its upper limit, and so far no probs.
If the laptop is on the fan doesn't kick in.
We use it to charge the laptop, and run it when downloading the GPS or photos.
Charging the makita torch, Charging camera battery, etc etc.
From memory it was under $90.

We have a Chinese winch so I wait in anticipation for your findings.

Can we open a new thread?.
Drew,s news??????? or Drews mythbusters????? or dear drew????
                            Just a thought.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

I might get a chance to take some photos tomorrow of the winch before I put my newly home made bash plate on so I dare say you might see a new thread coming soon.
