  • Product Review: ScanGaugeII Trip Computer

    Product: ScanGaugeII Trip Computer/Digital Gauge

Outdated pricing information removed . Mod

The ScanGuageII is an Automotive Computer that connects to the vehicle's OBDII diagnostic port and allows the viewing and logging of diagnostic data such as Inlet Temp, Fuel Flow Rate, System Voltage and such.

It's data logging function allows you to view fuel consumption data for the current trip, day or tank. I've compared the displayed figure against my own figures from filling and odometer readings, and they are very close.

The system will also display road speed, and can have a correction factor applied to compensate for non-standard rolling diameter tyres.

The unit is backlit and the back lighting colour is user selectable, I find the default white to be the best.

The unit starts displaying automatically soon after the engine is started and keeps displaying for a few seconds after shutdown. While the engine is running all the menus and functions are available.

It is worth noting that the unit will not work with all vehicles. Lack of local official support makes this difficult, relying on user's individual experience. I think the unit works will all (or most) OBDII compliant vehicles.

There are a couple of bugs, most notably is that of you press any of the buttons waking the unit up without the engine running, the display doesn't shut off automatically, infact I can see no method of shutting it down apart from starting the engine and performing a normal shutdown after the unit establishes a data connection - or removing the main connection to the unit (resulting in a "unit has been disconnected at some stage" flag from appearing, see the user's manual).

The unit occasionally, maybe once every three months or so, locks up and doesn't respond - requiring data cable to be removed effecting a power cycle.

All in all I'm very happy with the ScanGaugeII, it's a neat little product and is a handy tool. It wouldn't want to be much dearer though.

I suggest we use this thread as a compatibility database, by this I mean include your vehicle's details and weather the unit worked or not. This might assist others deciding whether the unit will work in their vehicle or not.

I bought one from Wooders Garage for the Prado when I get it.

Dave said it works on the 2006 Prado diesel but has no reports on the 2007 but he has offered a 30day money back guarantee, from time i install.

Can't ask for better deal than that.

                  Matt,

I have no gripes with mine. In fact I would have to say it's one of the coolest accessories on my 120.

                  The trip functionality is great.

What price are wooders selling them for?

trip functionality gives you data on top speed, max rpm, max throttle, fuel use per hundred k's, distance traveled.

and gives you all that information by:

                    trip
                    day
                    previous day
                    tank

it also can tell you voltage, inlet temp, engine coolant temp, current fuel use (L per hour and L per 100ks) and a heap of other things.. im still testing, but as drew said, its probably the coolest thing in the prado atm.. and its too easy to mount.. comes with stick on velcro and you can feed the cable up next to the steering column for a tidy installation/easy removal.. im going to take it into a few other cars too..

the next door neigbours just bought an older TD 120, so im going to look if they have a connector for it..

                      Drew,
Rang Dave at Wooders 0413 138 550 and asked if he would do a special price for Pradopoint members.

He said seeing I had bought one , if at least another 4 members bought one he would do them for $215- not sure if that was 4 in total but we can follow that up later.

                      Normal price is $235.

He asked that I mention that it may not be suitable for all Prado's but that his 30 day money back guarantee would cover that.

In this regard it would be good if we could compile a list of existing owners with the model where it is installed and works and I can pass this on to him.

To get the special price mention that you are from Pradopoint.

I have no affiliation with Wooders and in fact got their name from this thread.

I would love to add a Scangauge unit to my bus, as well, but keep bumping into threads / comments about them not working on pre-2005 Prados. Mine's an '03 Petrol 120 series - so I guess that counts me out.

                        Cheers
