  • I reckon for hiway driving, our Prado feels gutless as it is with 32" tyres. If I ever have to fiddle around with the diffs, I think I'll be changing the ratio. 4L is awesome still though.

    • Hey Glen, I've just been reading through your list of mods (while drooling) and seen this;
      "If I were to install a supercharger or different brake calipers, I'll need to have my existing certificate updated."

      Did you still need to do that when you got the SC done? And when you say different calipers, do you mean new or just a different brand?

      • Hey mate,
        Yes, generally speaking a supercharger needs to be certified to be road legal. In NSW/RTA the rule is specifically about power increases of more than 20% or where a vehicle was not originally released with forced induction. I've had to get my certificate replaced with a new one. Luckily they were happy with the performance of my brakes so I've not had to modify them. I did have some issues with emissions testing though!

        For brake modifications, I'm not sure what I was referring to in the original post you read, but if I was required to improve the braking performance I'd need to upgrade to larger calipers. The moment you make significant changes to the brakes (alternative calipers, hoses, boosters, control boxes, etc) you'll need to have the vehicle brake tested and engineered. The testing is an expensive exercise.

          • So.... What do you plan to do to fix it? Look awesome though. Even my stock 265/75 are close to rubbing at the front. If I go through some thick mud, I reckon they'll definitely rub in the same spot yours are.

              • Nice work on the flaps. I have had major issues with my Cooper STT 265/75/16s rubbing and I had to take the mud flaps off entirely. I still touches but only on unusual angles.

                  How about trying some of the heat gun technique?

The result of which is, rubbing !
                          Looks great!

                          My 285/75R16 KM2 measures 33.1 on 8" rim, your previous tires (255/85R16) are 33.3 on 7" rim.
                          So not much bellow the Bighorn but who knows how accurate those specs are

                          • I just realised you don't have your side steps. Do you worry about sil damage with where you take your Prado? I haven't even scrubbed the side steps yet but my nephew used to fairly regularly in his Hilux (before the lift).

                              Cheers Steve The rebuild kit is $230 USD plus shipping - a little costly for home maintenance but definitely worth it. Letting something like this go would result in a much bigger / expensive failure. One of the worst risks of a supercharger is if it catastrophically fails and sends shrapnel directly into the engine intake. Can't imagine what I'd do if that happened.

                              Hey Ranster,
                              I'm not sure about the accuracy of those specs either. I called BFG a couple years back and they quoted 33.1", but perhaps that phone consultant was just calculating based on 255/85R16. I do know that the tread surface on the Bighorns are definitely wider, by about 20mm, and the height difference between worn BFG's and these has noticably affected my acceleration performance. Also, I was parked next to 2 month old BFG KM2's the other day, 285 aspect 33's. The height difference was very noticable!

                              Due to the body lift it's very rare that my sill is exposed more than the chasis and aux tank. I have very lightly scratched one side once, so of course it's a risk, but with good lines I haven't found it to be an issue. I do plan to make up full underbody protection and sliders soon though, so I can start tackling some even harder tracks.
