  • Yep, will almost certainly be those crappy chinese bearings.

If those Koyo's wear out there is something wrong. Nothing But Japanese bearings for me, even on the mower!

Any chance of documenting the cv replacement procedure when you do it?

Yeah I might have to consider changing axle supplies. I've always said I'm happy having this known "weak link" which is easy to replace (and carry spares), but the frequency of these failures is a little too much! Not entirely convinced yet though, because I fear what WILL fail next - diff, tie rods, ball joints, prop shaft, transfer case... ??

                • Love this whole thread Glen, well done..

How many K's have you got from your current BFG's? Looks like they are getting near to their end.

                  • Thanks Darran

Yes, the BFG's have been wearing away! I'd say they have between 20-40% tread left. I was worried they've worn too quickly but I've had them now for 2 years / 45,000 km. Considering the dual lockers and ratios have put the BFG's though some very harsh treatment, and they have several cuts/chips on the sidewalls, yet keep on going, I think they've done okay. I even leave little piles of rubber behind occasionally, from 4 wheels spinning.

Time to research my next set!

                    • Great Rig.

Love some of the mods and will be adding some to my todo list

I noticed from your photos you are using the tie down hook that is from the front of the car at the back.
Have you had to used this? How do you find it?

                      • Thanks JKAF,

Good spot! That hook has been used for many recoveries, including my own (see here), and many, MANY times to recover my mates GU Patrol from mud holes. Given he has 6" lift, 35" tyres and dual lockers, you can be sure he was stuck proper!! So, whilst I cannot state the rated strength of that hook, I can say from experience that it does the job.

Ideally I'd prefer to have two hooks, but I couldn't fit a second on the rear due to the proximity of the exhaust.

I have an aftermarket hook on the front. If I remember correctly it came from Repco, but the bolt thread was not matched to the chassis, so I ended up sourcing some bolts from James Glen, Lidcombe.

                        • I've bolted my tie down hook to the back (copied yours).

I've custom made a couple of recovery points for the front as the after market ones don't fit with my bulbar.
They look similar to others you see around, made out of 10mm thick angle iron.

So now I'm good to tie up front or back.

By the way, the bolts spec is 12 x 60 x 1.25, of course High Tensile steel.
I think it translates to 12mm diameter by 60mm (length I needed) by 1.25 mm thread

Thanks for the idea and info.
