  • Here's a mod I done over a year ago:

I wanted to install a larger battery for increased RC (reserve capacity), to improve the chance of my battery surviving a night of running accessories at a campsite. I didn't opt for a second battery as I don't run a fridge or winch.

Andy, I use this simple formula to know what radios should go:

      New tire / Old tire X 4.10

      32" / 30" X 4.10 = 4.37

If I was you, I go with 4.56 bacause in the future maybe go with 33" tires.

      Cheers

        • 4.56 sounds sensible. but I would wait until you do actually upgrade the tyre size, and decide then.

          Thanks MDST

Yes, you are right. Maybe Andy stick with 32" tires.

            • Thanks for your help Glen

I Don't think I'll be upgrading tire size any time soon as i live qld with the stupid 15mm Max increase in tire size......Maybe one day DOT qld will change the policy

              Andy
              I had mental issues when I owned a Discovery.......But it's sorted now!

                      • Hi Glen
Love what you have done with your Prado, looks awesome!
Last month I finally got a Prado, I have a 1996 VX Grande, all stock with Grandtrek's and a nudge bar. For a beginner 4WD'er with your experience with your Prado, what upgrades would you recommend first and why? Thanks in advance.

Depends on what you're planning on doing.. but if you're asking purely from a 4x4ing point of view; I'd recommend a 2" lift, 265/75R16 tyres (MT, unless you drive a lot weekdays) and maybe even a rear locker if it's within your initial budget. That'll get the most bang for buck regarding suspension and tyres, and a rear locker will take you very far. If you can outgrow that, then it's time to consider a bigger solid axle vehicle, or go nuts like I did!

Just starting out with 4WDing, did alot as a kid with my dad but haven't done much since. A lift and tyres would fit in my budget but not the locker sadly Also looking into recovery gear any suggestions?
Do you have a photo of the custom rear shelf?

How do you find being without a winch? Haha well, I guess I'll see how attached to the Prado I get, as to whether I go mad like you or upgrade :P

Start with proper recovery points and a full recovery kit - they don't cost too much and will be used many times over. There's no argument that a winch is useful, but when on a budget you need to decide what kind of gear is right for you, ie,

                              Lots of mud = winch
                              Rutty/rocky tracks = locker
Beach = maxxtraxx or air jack
                              Regularly travel alone = winch!

I've never required recovering on rutty/rocky tracks, or soft sand, but deep sticky mud can get ANY vehicle stuck. For those extreme situations I actually have a hand winch for back up.
