  • Terrible Auto transmission.

    Hey guys,

So does anyone here share my same thoughts in thinking that the 5 Speed auto behind the 3.0L diesel is Shit!
Mine always wants to be in 5th with the lock up converter on. Going through round abouts straight at 40km/h and its in 5th. it doesn't like kicking down until you really push the throttle.

In hoping to fix this issue I have had Toyota carry out the latest software updates, carried out a trans service using genuine fluids, fitted a trans cooler, with no luck. It's just so doughy!

Anyone had a tune done to alter when 5th gear and the lock up converter come on?

No worries with mine , is everything stock ?, have you owned it since new?
I do drive mine in sports mode a lot though due to the country I drive in

I bought mine second hand @ 107,000km. It's now on 129,000km. But it has always been like this.
I came from a manual diesel triton into this and just thought it's the way it is. But I just don't like it.
The car is stock. Has EGR blank fitted, catch can, k&n filter, I also have the wind booster fitted hoping to speed up the pedal delay and that's it. No tune or anything silly like that.

It should not go into 5th lock-up until around 1500 rpm so around 60-70km/h. The tranny is meant to learn your driving style and can be reset.

You don't mention how old the car is. It might be worth servicing the tranny, especially if its done some towing.

A lot of the complaints used to be that it didn't go into 5th early enough as its designed for economy rather than speed. It is a 2.5t 4WD and the tranny does the 4WD part pretty well apart from overheating issues which are fixed with a cooler.

          Hey krypto,
The car is 2012 and I have already done the trans service a month ago using Genuine fluid at the same time fitted a trans cooler.
I fitted the towbar to the car when I bought it so I have been the only one towing with it.

I did get the adaptive values reset hoping for it re learn my driving style. Maybe I baby it too much and it's learnt the style.
Fuel economy is on 10.4L/100km around town.

The Prado is actually a 3.0L diesel not 2.5L

My auto was similar to yours until I changed the fluid to Penrite LV. Now it works great. The Toyota WS fluid seems so thin its almost like there is no pressure in the hydralics of the transmission.

Not sure where you got 2.5L from, I did mention that it is a 2.5t (t=tonne) 4WD

I doubt the first three bits would affect the ATF, but mate, its certainly not a stock vehicle with those drivetrain accessories...

The A750F is the best trans I've had and goes great in the 100 series also. I'd be happy to have it again on my 1GD.

Your economy is great, your trans has a cooler which keeps the fluid cooler (and can allow a taller gear earlier/longer) and the pedal booster will surely have some impact.
                Cheers

Yep I have the same dislike of the auto box, I have a 2013 facelift with 60k. I find the Prado box is happy to go up through the gears from a standing start but if you slow down for a roundabout for example it will stay in 4th gear unless you put your foot down to make it kick down a gear (or two). The quicker you want to drive the car the more you'll notice how bad it is.
I've been complaining to Toyota for the last 12 months, when towing a 1600kg trailer in the suburbs I'm getting 120 deg gearbox temp and 130 torque converter temp. I haven't installed a cooler yet but will get the gearbox flushed shortly and install a cooler at the same time.
I managed to speak to a senior mechanic about it. Basically all Prado gearboxes are lazy, some more than others. There is no fix from Toyota and they won't look into it properly unless there is a fault code showing. The dealers can go as far as updating the software to the newest version (if available) but it won't fix the laziness.
My previous car was a XR6 with the ZF 6 Speed, the torque converter locked up in every gear from about 1500rpm onwards, it was a well programed gearbox.
I changed the centre muffler a couple of years ago and besides making the car go better also allowed the torque converter to lock up sooner and for longer. I also always use the sports mode when driving, the only time it does in drive is when my girlfriend drives the car. I often wonder why I spent the extra 2k for an auto box.

                    When I drive my kid's 2012 D4D 150 auto, I find just the opposite.
As soon as you touch the brake for a round-about etc, it automatically drops gears to engine brake which I find annoying.
Is yours doing this, doesn't sound like it is?
The only time it stays in lock up is if I wash off the speed gradually with gentle accelerator.
Then it will stay in 5th and still locked up, way down to around 1200rpm.
I have a 90 auto and she's very old school, nothing fancy about her.

And lv is te same lv= low vis.

Generally, Try fs, same spec, but will actually help your trans last longer & smoother.

I checked mine today as I don't usually notice any more and it definitely changes down as soon as I brake. It's no sports transmission but it doesn't hold the gears excessively. Maybe you should drive another 150 to see if its the same as yours?

Did you say it "Down shifts when you brake"? Mine defiantly does not Down shift AT ALL.
the only time it will down shift is when going down hill and I touch the brake, it will drop down and hold 4th to maintain engine RPM.
