  • 2.8 Diesel Prado Engine Break in Peroid

    Hi All

I have successfully done 500km in 3 weeks of picking up the prado.
Is there a engine break in period i need to stick to?
Should i do a engine oil and oil filter change at the 1000km?

I was informed an early oil change was not necessary and since I was forecasting having done about 4000km by the first 6 month service (which worked out as accurate) I did not worry about it.

they do stuff all at the 1000k service its just a check taking 5minutes . take it in anyway though , becuase if you dont they will accuse you of skipping services and use any excuse to void warranty.
no oil change required till 10,000.

personally , i wouldnt touch it and just let them do all servicing at the prescribed intervals. Worst case scenario is - if anything in the engine breaks they can get a DNA analysis done on the oil , which will pick up any non genuine oil or additional oil changes , additives , etc and null the warranty.

            2 contradicting options:

1: The careful owner that wants the best.

Baby it from new be cautious, and it'll be a slug!
However, I would take it in at the due first inspection, then check to see if the filter or oil was replaced, if not I would buy genuine oil/filter and change it myself. The thought of castings and foreign items in a new engine runs shivers down my spine.

2: Drive it like a company car and it'll go hard and last forever.

When I get the luxury to buy a brand new car, I'd probably do whats required, drive it factory servicing, and then replace it before the warranty ends. enjoy it and don't stress.

I think that Toyota are already being cautious with 6 month (or 10,000km) oil changes. I would get more worried about LR Evoque Diesels which claim a 2 year and 34,000 interval - which seems too extreme the other way.

I thought they used a different oil for the first 10 thousand for the break-in period, then changed it to the normal oil at 10k? First 1k I moved my revs around a bit for run in but after that I've driven as normal which is occasionally sinking the boot. At 20k now and it goes pretty good now, I was a little disappointed at first but it's loosened up now and I'm happy with how it goes.

I find it funny car manufacturers say to baby it and no heavy loads! Where mining machinery they come off the boat and straight down the pit to work. Typically diesel engines like loads to bed the rings not idling around.
