Hi All,
We have just bought a caravan and went over to change the 7-pin round trailer plug to a 12-pin flat plug to match our 12-pin flat socket.
As most of us are aware, the Australian Standards for the Wiring Configurations of 12-pin Trailer Plugs is as per listed below, with the #1 - #7 being the wiring configuration for 7-pin plugs.
Upon opening the 7-pin plug on our new caravan, THE WIRING CONFIGURATION & COLOUR CODING WAS ALL WRONG (as per listed below).
*** The colour coded wiring for #2 + #3 differed from what they are meant to be (the Australian Standards).
*** The White wire for Earth was completely non-existent and was replaced with the use of 2x Black wires (1 thick wire + 1 thin wire)
*** Although the correct colour coded wire (Blue) was in #5, again there was 2x wires, both in the same hole (1 thick wire + 1 thin wire)
We matched up the colour coded wires to their respective Plugs as per the current 7-Pin Plug wiring with the following changes and exceptions.
- The thin Black wire added to #3 for Earth and the thick Black wire added to #10, also for Earth.
- We left the Orange thick wire in #2 disconnected from any pins
- We lerft the Blue thick wire in #5 disconnected from any pins
We then tested the Plugs with all Indicator and Stop Brake lights working normally.
So for #1 - #7 pins, everything was connected with the exception of #2 being left disconnected for Reverse light.
For pins #8 - #12, only #10 is connect for Earth with the thick Black wire.
(1) Can someone please advise their thoughts on what / where the thick Orange wire should go? Should we plug that back into the empty pin #2 for Reverse lights as per the current 7-pin wiring on the caravan, or should this Orange wire be connected to #8 for Battery Supply?
(2) What should we do with and/or where should we connect the 2nd thick Blue wire?
*** It is determined that wiring for the Pins #8, #9, #11 + #12 are NON-EXISTENT ***
(3) Can the thick Blue and Orange wires be connected to any of the empty pins - #8, #9, #11, #12?
