    2003 Prado GX KZJ120

    Hi everyone,

What a great forum - I've been glued to it for hours & like some others here, I'm about to dive into Prado Land. I'm looking at a 2003 GX KJZ120 (online) & if I decide to buy it, an RACQ inspector will have to look over it b/c I'm in the outback at the mo.

But not having bought a Landy before, I've a few questions & I'd really appreciate some ideas on them if you folks have time. I've also put the ad up for the Prado if anyone has a chance to check it out. This GX has most of the goodies I need on it except for spotties.

My questions are ... on a non optioned GX:

    - does it have traction control?
    - is the VIN difficult to find?
    - what are GX 'skinny' wheels vs GLX's 'wide' wheels?
    - are skinny wheels generally rubbish on outback/heavy sand/flooded roads?
    - where would one fit a 2nd spare wheel if there are no roof racks (I'll remove them if they're heavy enough to push up fuel consumption)?

I've got 100 questions to ask the seller but not having done this before, if anyone has some extra GX-specific ones to throw in, I'd be really grateful!! I checked the seller's asking price against RedBook & it's a bit over the recommended $12K buuut given that it hasn't done over 350K kms, I consider $13500 to be fair ... but am I just being naive??

Thanx so much for any thoughts & advice!

    cheers
    Sarah

Traction control : no but is a factory option.

VIN : on the firewall, driver's side

Skinny wheels: 225/70R17 on 6.5" rims. This was later changed to 245/70R17.

GXL wheels: 265/65R17 on 7.5" wide rims.

Narrow tyres perform better offroad given that the overall tyre diameter is the same.
The tyres in the ad have 4 wide tyres on Hilux rims while the spare is the original skinny GX rim/tyre.

2nd spare: either a twin wheel carrier or on roofracks.

Thanx so much, amts. It's amazing you can see all that from an ad! I'm thinking I should go with all wide or all skinny & as I'm driving about 8K km/yr on sealed roads, 2K km/yr on dirt, would wide be the way to go as bitumen is the majority of the surface?

One more thing I saw in the ad: the bullbar is for a flared Prado. Yours is non-flared. So the end of the bullbar pokes out a bit. The wide tyres also poke out a bit past the guards.

The GX's skinny tyres don't look very good due to the rim offset. However skinny tyres have slightly better fuel economy. If you bought that Prado, it would be easier to swap the spare to the same Hilux rim and wide tyres. Also add some screw-on flares to keep the police away.

Pull the sear covers off and check they aren't hiding something. Lift the rear carpet and look for rust on the floor near the rear door seal. Last have a good look t the dash, bulges or cracks are common.

Even a steel wheel as a spare unless you want to rotate tyres.
