  • Prado KDJ120 vs Pathfinder R51

    Hello,

Not trying to start a Toyota vs Nissan debate here, but hoping there might some advice on how Pathfinders measure up to our favourite car.

I'm currently driving a petrol 1996 model 90 series, which has been in the family over 20 years. Great car, but time to upgrade. My first preference is a KDJ120 - GXL or VX but I'm finding good ones few and far between, or more the point, bl**dy expensive. $30k for a 10 year old car (maybe 120km) is big money. I've noticed equivalent aged Pathfinders are around $17k which is huge difference. I think everyone here prefers the Toyota badge, bigger fuel tanks and proper rear axle travel.

But wondering who's got experience with Pathfinders and if they're in the same league?

    Thanks
    Ed

Mate, I had an R51 and then a 120 (D4D) and never looked back.

The traction control system was a joke and it really needed it with the lack of wheel articulation - front and rear.

Whilst the performance side of things was almost identical, the GXL had a better quality and more spacious interior, and also the usual couple of points you have already hit above.

The R51 did handle better of course, being 4 wheel independent suspension but with some OME suspension under the 120 I was more than happy with the move to 'team toyota'

In the same league? - maybe, depends on your intended use. 3T towing on the R51 is good if you have a big van/boat but you cant beat a 120 for touring and even moderate 4 wheeling...
    Cheers
    Micheal.

I sold a 2011 Pathfinder to buy the 2016 2.8l Prado. The Pathy was a great car, better engine and transmission than the Prado, more power and so much better economy... and no DPF !
Prado trim quality wins hands down, the Pathy was very plasticky. Fuel range was always an issue with only 80l on board and no where for an aux battery under the bonnet, hated the rear IRS... Didn't have a single issue warranty or otherwise in the 5 years I owned the Pathy.
Prado NVH is a little better.

My 2007 did have a DPF but I had no problems with it at all.

I don't agree on the engine and trans, the auto was one of the reasons I got rid of it - I couldn't stand the way the torque converter slipped and may has well been a CVT!

Mine was a series 4 where they dropped the DPF and lifted the power and torque.

A mate of mine always complained about the lack of third party accessories for his Pathfinder.
