  • Over torqued spark plugs, back em off or leave them?

So I'm doing the plugs in my 120. I torqued the first three to 21ftlbs as that's what it said on spark plug pack. Then watched a vid that said my engine should have plugs torqued to 15lbs. So do I back off the first three or leave them? I did the next ones at 18lbs.

What does Toyota manual say? I'd be going by that personally.

Yeah 15 I'd say. Will back them off and retorque to less.

Nm of lbft. Very different so check carefully.

BIL brother found out the hard way the difference between Nm and lbft. Torqued the heads on a Cummins diesel using Nm specification with a torquewrench set to lbft. Head bolts stretched in service. Blew all the gaskets. In the middle of nowhere. Expensive mistake.

"In the recent ABC-TV series The Lost Tools of Henry Hoke," writes Max Andersen, of Orange (peculiar units of measurement, Column 8, for a furlong or so), "there is a brief appearance of two micrometers. One is calibrated in 'bee's dicks', the other in 'smidgeons'." We believe that the apostrophe in "bee's" is in the right place, but had to look twice. As for smidgeons, we think that there are three smidgeons in a pinch, and two pinches to a skerrick. But readers are advised to be careful when using American recipes.

I backed off them and did them to 16. Didn't feel silly tight. The 21 did.

Torquing things up correctly that go into the engine or rocker covers is pretty important. If you over tighten the spark plugs a fair bit you can strip the thread or break one when removing a few years later. Then you'd be up for a new rocker cover. 3nm over wouldn't be an issue though I wouldn't think. Buy a Gregory's manual when doing any more work on the motor though as it has all the correct torque specifications in it. Rocker cover bolts for example are very important to nip up correctly and evenly throughout because the tightest one will be the first to back itself off via heat expansion and contraction, then the others can follow because there's a weak link. Thread locker won't help here either because that stuff melts when a lot of heat is applied. Then soon you've got a pesky oil leak. Water pump bolts, although there are a lot that go into one water pump, are generally only tightened to a reasonably light 20nm too because of the constant heat expansion and contraction. The most important thing with spark plugs is making sure they're don't work loose because then your car will run sick, and not so tight that they can freeze a little and be difficult to remove later on. If one is ever tight to remove, just be gentle in doing so. Don't go too hard in trying to crack it loose.
