  • Front/Rear Diff, Transfer Case and Gearbox Oil Change

    Hello All,

How often Front/Rear Diff, Transfer Case and Gearbox Oil Change should occur. I was going to do it every 20 000 kms but that could be too soon.

Can anyone enlighten me as to when (how many kms driven) these oils should be changed, thanks.

I'm not sure what model Prado you have, and I'm not sure why you aren't wanting to refer to the handbook that came with your car, noting the usual service intervals, but also the recommended service intervals for what Toyota refers to as "additional service requirments"...(which applies in conditions which are just about any sort of driving we do in Australia to be honest)...the book sets this all out in tables and in the recommended service pages....but I have summarised it into a spreadsheet that I cant attach, but here is a copy of part of my spreadsheet that I use to keep track of my own service items. Mine is an auto, so I haven't looked at when to change the gear box oil....But honestly, and just a very friendly comment (and definitely not being rude), but please have a good read of the book that came with your car...it has lots of information about service intervals...and read the section about servicing when driving under adverse conditions....I think its towards the rear of the service booklet. If you haven't got the book or have lost it or whatever, you might be able to get a copy on line, or photocopy someone else's book, but you don't tell us what model of Prado you have, so I'm not sure if there are any differences in the intervals...this is the service intervals I go by anyway...

Service Item Toyota typical Frequency Adverse conditions *
    Engine oil (7.7 litres, C2 oil) R every 10,000km 5,000km
    Engine Oil filter R every 10,000km 5,000km

    Brake fluid R every 40,000km
Auto trans fluid Not Specified R every 80,000km
Power Steering Fluid Not specified R every 80,000km
Air con pollen filter R every 30,000km R every 15,000km

    Engine coolant (inclintercooler coolant) R 160,000km, then @ 80,000km
    F & R differential oil R every 40,000km R every 20,000km
Transfer case oil Not specified R every 40,000km
Lube prop shaft (and drive train) Lube every 10,000km Lube every 5,000km

I do lots of km's, so I service my car well before the "time" intervals, but if you don't do lots of km, AND especially if you are still under warranty, don't forget that you may need to service your vehicle according to the number of months that have elapsed rather than they amount of km's traveled..the service is according to km OR months elapsed, whichever comes first.

How often does my vehicle require servicing? This depends upon the vehicle and its operating conditions. It is recommended you consult your Warranty and Service Handbook to determine the correct servicing schedule. Vehicles operating under severe conditions will require more frequent servicing. Following the "Toyota Maintenance Schedule" (also available on toyota.com.au) will help ensure your vehicle remains in top condition. Your Toyota Dealer can assess your individual circumstances and advise you on the most appropriate maintenance schedule for your needs.

        Hi Guys,

What oil are you using when carrying out the Diff and Transfer case flush?
I use Castrol in my other cars but the website says to Refer To Dealer, which usually indicates that they don't have a compatible oil.
but the quote I got from Toyota says the oils I need are 85w/90 LSD GL5 and 85w/90 oil.
These are all normal Castrol oils?

Can anyone shed any extra light on it? does it need a Friction modifier? I would just usually run LSX 90 in an LSD diff. 75w/85 in the transfer case.

Have you replaced the oil yourself? what you will find is a lot of dealer don't use Genuine oils.
they use Castrol, Penrite etc oil that is the same spec as what Genuine recommend.
But you can still buy Genuine Toyota oil, but chances are they don't use those genuine oils in normal service.

Sheesh, there is 2 threads on same topic so I have asked that question twice now. Ok penrite, so you using front and rear or just rear like their site recommends.

What km you up to, I also read in another thread that castrol lsx90 made them noisy.
