  • Delayed shifting down in petrol auto

    Hi everyone.

I noticed something recently, and wanted to get some early opinions to see what I might be in for.

    I have a 2005 GXL petrol auto.

Over the past week I've noticed the auto transmission has been a bit slow shifting down.

Bringing the car to a firm stop from +40kmh, the car will usually come to a halt in second gear (this is consistent, and is normal behavior to me).

On odd occasions lately, after coming to a halt in second (or a higher gear?), it has taken 5-10 seconds for the car to kick back into first. Normally, the car changes back to first almost immediately in the same situation.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

Any clues as to why this is happening?

    All input is greatly appreciated.

KMs? Has the transmission fluid been changed? If not, do it. It smooths out the changes.

      Hi 404pug,

      Around 150k on the clock.

I don't believe the trans fluid has been done previously, but I could be wrong (third owner).

Had Toyota look at it, they said the trans fluid was fine, and there was no need to change. They also said the trans fluid used from factory is "different" to most - Supposedly superior, with a life span significantly longer. They suggested it would cost several hundred dollars for the fluid alone, even to purchase elsewhere.

      Does this sound right?

Any other ideas why these symptoms might be occurring?

I would flush the transmission anyway. $150 for 12L. Then DIY.

Have a look at this thread for a bit more info on the fluid as well as some instruction on DIY.
