  • Low Low low profile roof rack options!

Been checking the forum search function but don't think anyones broached this subject before unless they have installed the Rhino Pioneer platform and rails.......So i have to be under 2.1m for the car park and dont want to keep taking the roof rack off the Prado. Currently sitting at about 2.0m ( 2 inch lift and Rhino Sx bars on the factory rails).
I've been putting on taking off a roof basket but its wearing thin, it takes ages and is a PITA. When want to go, i want to go!
I'm looking at a low , flat low profile roof rack that doesn't cost me $1600 ( as the pioneer platform and rails was quoted to me here in Melbourne)
    My options are :
    Tradesman oval alloy ~ $1420
Rola Titan tray on top of the factory rails ( might be just enough clearance)
or assorted ebay flat roof low profile roof racks
Anyone any suggestions that wont break the bank?
Only things going up top are swags, maybe the long instant up oztrail tent , maybe a chainsaw and will have my awning attached.

    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Smokey

Since you already have the SX bars, just get the Pioneer SX platform and shift the legs across. $839 rrp.
Unless you want to bolt directly to the roof, I would go with the 6 feet option. Buy the HD roofrack kit from Toyota (it will be cheaper than from Rhino) and get the right size Pioneer platform you want. 1928x1236 is $859rrp

$1600 is an expensive quote. Give these guys a call http://www.roofrackcity.com.au/ I got mine delivered from them at a great price, but only on the phone.. pretty sure it was about $100 for the Pioneer platform and the 6 feet. Installed it myself in just an hour or 2

RRP for Rhino Pioneer platform and backbone is about $1350-ish for the largest one they make. I think a little less if you get the 6 legs rather than the platform.

Another alternative is the Frontrunner which is about the same price from memory. I have one and it has been very good.

Dolium are now selling another brand called K9, same type of thing as the Frontrunner and Pioneer Platform. About $1300.

The 4wd supercentre ones are closer in price to what is reasonable for what is essentially a flat tray. $800-1300 for essentially the same thing in brand names is a clear overreach in price for what you get! That said, I already have the Toyota Heavy Duty racks [3 of] and am looking for a flat rack like the supercentre ones BUT without the legs. Any suggestions?

              404pug,

My $1200 front runner track had traversed the CSR, Madigan line twice, Anne Beadell, Connie Sue highways, etc and has never missed a beat. Often times heavily loaded.

On the last trip I did one vehicle with us had a rack from the place you have mentioned and we had to rebuild it with fencing wire half way along the Connie Sue hwy. The fencing wire made it stronger that it was when it left the factory.

Sometimes you just have to pay more for good quailty.

                Hi all,

I am looking at an alloy full length cage rack for $599. Had a similar one on another car that was steel and it was really good.

Question for all given we are discussing racks, manual suggests maximum roof load is 80kg's - 150 series, rack I am looking at weighs 25kgs.

Has anyone with a 150 series ever had more than 80kg's on the roof, seems low compared to what I have put on other models/brands I have owned?

Autobarn and Auto One very often come up with 25% off sales - and more often 20%. Last 25% was Christmas, next due in Easter (or get the regular 20%). They always say its for stock only - I just called up one and asked them to price-match the other (didn't lie, but nor did I tell them they didn't have it in stock).

My Pioneer BackBone cost $1026 all up, and with a 30mm lift front and rear I have measured the back, at the highest point, to be 1.94 metres (standard GrandTreks at this stage but no intention to increase wheel diameter). I am doubly confident with my measurements as there's a 1.95 clearance limit carpark I go into all the time, and I have never hit the sign that dangles (which is supposed to be at 1.95m).

                    Or make one like this.

The 120 series has grooves on the inside of the rails allowing mount points inside the rails. Used 3mm steel folded to make a 60 x 25 angle. 50mm tube (exhaust) welded and a 1.6 mm plate under the front leading edge to reduce wind noise.
Brackets could be made for the 150 as well. Ours houses a solar panel and the 50mm tubes are 5 mm higher than the panel so i can carry ladders or long timber.

I have a tough basket[ cost $150 second hand from Roof Rack City] that has done CSR, Simpson, High Country, Googs etc on the 120 with 4 cross bars on the roof rails. Now I have 150 GX and the basket only sits on 2 of the cross bars. For such trips I prefer that the weight is spread over 3 mounting points/bars. Perhaps I will just weld/bolt an extension onto the back of it and perhaps put the Max Tracks across the back. I know that this basket is super strong! Just a few days ago I saw a Patrol with a solid piece of ARC weldmesh fencing as the base of a rack. Hmmmm

Thanks for the replies- i think i'm about at the limit even though the car park says 2.1 the ramp on the way in increase your elevation momentarily and of course the bloody sign boom saying 2.1 meters! is right above it.
If i go with the Pioneer on top of the SX bars i think i will be too high.
The $1600 quote was actually from the aforementioned roof rack place.
The 4wdsupacente racks are steel and whilst a good price i'm really looking to maximise the weight i can carry , i figure steel racks are probably close to 50kg up top with alloy, probably half that.
Has anyone seen these or used these types from ebay?

More realistic price and a lot lower than a Pioneer on top of existing racks.
I'd be happy to replace the SX bars and factory rails to not have to take a rack off and on every time i want to take my swag out.
I've got a roof basket only 1200 x 1200mm but its a massive PITA to put on and then take off.
I might have kinda sorta dropped it off the roof last time.....only left a tiny little scratch.
At least thats what i tell the Mrs....

Has anyone used the Titan tray from Rola? There website is basically useless and i emailed them and they were pretty much the same. No dimensions for height etc

Smoker, I have a GX Prado with 265/70/17 tyres and a lift that would be 75mm at the rear. With the frontrunner rack on I still fit under any carpark that says 2.1m.
