  • Does anyone insure their box trailer?

I recently got a box trailer for general domestic use. It's a 6x4 galvanised job with full cage, tilt function, spare wheel, jockey wheel and the suspension has been raised for 4WD's (leafs sit on the axle, not under). It's basically brand new as the previous owner used it once in a year (I've used it twice in a week). Got it for a steal at $900 with 6mths rego still on it.

Anyway I took out a policy for it with the same insurer we have everything else with but the price was $230/yr.
I thought was a very steep. The Prado is only $350/yr.
I'm still in the cooling off period.
I was thinking it would be included in the car insurance or maybe $50/yr extra.

Who else has insurance on their box trailer? Not campers or anything else of decent value. Just ya ordinary box trailer. I'm worried if I reversed into someone and being covered + it being stolen/damaged. Even 3rd party fire and theft was $180/yr(or around that, can't quite remember).

Thoughts? I'm having trouble finding insurance companies that insure general box trailers. They're all caravans, campers or tradie trailers where you carry a decent amount of high value stuff.

Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

I'd be more worried about $350 a year for the Prado?!? Does it sit in a locked garage and not go out?!

That's unbelievably cheap. For a Prado.

If the trailers on your car and you reverse into someone with it, your vehicle insurance should cover it.

$350 a year for the Prado? Are you talking about the CTP only? I'm 'mature-age' with a totally clean history and multiple-policy discount and from memory I don't see any change from $1000 if not more...

CTP Insurance is not insuring your Prado for anything...

As an aside - if you check your Comprehensive Car policy, often they will have anything you're towing included in the lump sum. So for a box trailer, that's find. If it's for a TVAN or similar, then if both are a write-off then you're only covered for the $$ figure you've put the car down.

I am with AAMI, my trailer cover is included under the comprehensive car insurance policy of the tug.

My hard floor camper is valued at about $6000.

It is fully insured with AAMI for about $165 per year which includes some cover for accessories.

This is my understanding with RACQ though I will check. Box trailer only and limited $. Tvan has its own policy.

My box trailer is with RACQ, about $50 a year. When I moved our new car to Budget they didn't do trailers separately so I tried youi and they wanted $350 a year lol.

Yes, it is Youi that it's insured with. I just tried RACQ since I'm a silver member. Less than $50. Sold. Taken that up and cancelled the Youi policy.
p.s. I don't wont to hear a Youi battle here. I've heard it all before.
