  • Prado destroyed

Unfortunately I have to report to fellow PP's that my beloved 150 series Prado and caravan was written off in a major accident last Tuesday after being hit by a woman who fell asleep. We had been returning from the Gold Coast along the Pacific Highway near Brunswick Heads when a mature aged P plater left the roadway as the driver had fallen asleep at 10am. Upon waking she has swerved back onto the highway at 90kph and lost control slamming into the rear of the Prado and the front of our almost 2.5T caravan I had been towing. This then caused us to jacknife at 100kph and sent us into a 180deg spin whereby the van left the road and flipped before slamming into a tree. Luck was very much on our side as when the van flipped this detached the hitch from the tow ball and prevented us from flipping too. The safety chains kept us attached, but the van took the majority of the impact and the hitch attempted to punch through the rear door where my middle daughter was sitting. Side curtain airbags on the drivers side deployed but otherwise we were all uninjured and walked away. The other driver had a minor laceration to her head and was suffering concussion. My wife and I are so grateful that the Prado stayed upright and saved our three kids and ourselves from harm.

The offending driver had fallen asleep as she had been gambling all night at Jupitors Casino and was returning home to Ballina about 1.5hrs away. She was completely uninsured (probably because she'd gambled all the money away). My Prado and caravan were fully insured with NRMA and they have been great as both are write-offs.

I captured the entire incident on my dash cam and the footage is pretty amazing. I managed to remove some bolt on mods before it went to the assessors so have listed my Steinbauer chip, Pedalbox throttle booster, K&N Filter and secondary fuel filter for sale in the classified sections. I lost 140lts of fuel as I had just filled up prior to the accident, my recently fitted OME 2 inch lift and Taipan 3 inch exhaust.

Not happy, even sadder now I have just bought a Ford Everest as I needed the upgraded towing capacity.

You are one lucky SOB. Great that all of you came through unscathed for the most part.

Mate glad to hear you and your family walked away from this unhurt, thats the most important thing everything else can be replaced. Its a reminder to us all that no matter how careful and responsible we are on the roads our safety and wellbeing also relys on the competence and behaviours of other road uses, thats often a very scary thought.

Sorry to hear of your accident.
The main thing is that no one was left with a major injury, vehicles can be fixed, body's take a lot longer to fix or can never be fixed.
          Cheers

Wow, glad you are all OK Racketsports! Lucky that LPG cylinder didn't explode from the impact, could have been a very different result. Just goes to show how strong the Prado is, it managed to stay upright even with the van trying to flip it.

I was planning on buying the Prado at the end of the lease in 10 months and keeping it as it had been so well looked after throughout it's life. Every service I did an engine flush and post service added friction reducer all using LiquidMolly products. It had so many extras fitted like transmission cooler, Great White LED's, ARB LED indicators etc that I have now lost. If it wasn't for the towing capacity I'd get another but the Ford Everest Titanium has so many bells and whistles it was hard not to go with it. Time will tell if I have made a sensible decision as I was going to go a 200 series but wasn't happy with what I would get for my budget and lacked warranty.

Interesting that thePrado was written off? Was the chassis bent? or because the rear section not repairable. Everything else ( to me) looks superficial. Or is the cost of replacement panels just too much these days and it's easier to just write off the vehicle. Extremely glad you and your family are OK btw..

Bugger. Nobody getting hurt is the main thing.

Sorry to hear you're no longer in a Prado. At least it kept you safe.

The dashcam footage is excellent. What model were you using?

Also a very good demonstration of two things: (1) built-in modern safety features and crash survivability of current cars and (2) the need to have adequate insurance cover for all your valuables for when things really go pear-shaped.

That is vastly reduced quality from the HD original version because I had to reduce it to post. That is actually a screen copy of the original which is in really high definition. I am using a Navman Mivue 358 which is about 3-4 years old.

                            Wow, glad you're all ok.

Did you see the other car before it hit you? Did you jump on the brakes or just take your foot off the accelerator and let it do it's thing? Looks from the video that whatever driving you did reduced the carnage and kept it upright.

                              Looks like a Mivue.
Shame it didn't have speeds and impact data shown but good footage none the less.

Quite surprised at the car at your 10. Didn't seem to even flinch when she drove off the road?!?!

                              Glad your all ok.
Shame about the Everest 😉 but would be interesting to have some feedback posted how you find it compared to the 150?
