Yes I have used this app (Avenza pdf maps). The base app is free but you need to download individual maps - some maps are free, others are not. The main maps I use have been downloaded from the Australian Geoscience site. These are the 1:250k topographic series. Downloaded from the Aust Geoscience site these maps are free. The same topo maps are also avaible for download from the Avenza site as well which is a bit easier to navigate than the govt site - but on the Avenza site I found that the more popular topo maps were not free. The Avenza site has many maps from all sources and covering the world. Some maps are free, others are not. I have only used the app/maps as far outback as Broken Hill and found it extremely accurate. I,ve not used it an isolated off road situation such as out in the Tanami Desert. I mainly use it to plot where I am although from memory it wiil alsoplot & store the route you have travelled. Its not a true vehicle gps system in the sense that it will recommend a route to get from A to B nor does it give turn by turn guidance. Also I've used it with a few maps I created myself. Thse were created with a computer program called QGIS which is also free. I run it on Windows7 laptop. The maps are created by scanning a sutable map as tif file importing it into QGIS and using theQGIS georeferencer module to calibrate the tif picture. That is then exported as a geotif file which you can load onto whatever you are using to run the Avenza app. Up til a couple of days ago I was only using Avenza on an ipad air mini (i.e. using the ios version) but yesterday I loaded the android version app onto a Samsung phone. I have put 6 or so of the Aus Geoscince 250k maps on the phone sd card. So far the android version looks and feels just like the ios version with one unusual difference. The android version only allows you to have imported 3 maps not downloaded from the Avenza site - if you want to change you have to delete one and import another. You can still have as many as you like on the sd card but Avenza will only allow three - just have re import from the sd card.On my ios ipad it sees all the maps at once. The app can also tag photos and some other nifty things - I'm sitting at the airport typing this socan,t recall what else it does. I began to use the app because it was free as were the Aust govt maps- I can,t comment on its advantages/disadvantages over things like Hema, Meory Maps etc because I,ve not used those.

I've tried this app and other apps recommended here but in the end, went for the new Hema HX1. Problem that I've had was my IPad was wifi only so either had to buy a gps dongle or another iPad. Also would have had to buy ram mounts. One of the things that I've found is that if your iPad gets hot, just over 30°, it will shut down until it cools off. Checked with Hema technical support and the HX1 has a 60° temp cut out. Also stated in manual. Not much good having an iPad on the dash in the middle of outback that cuts in and out. (Don't think it would be doing the iPad much good either).

Overall, pretty happy with the HX1, bought for $629 from RAA. My Altitude has Toyota sat Nav same as Kakadu. After using the "Drive" navigation on HX1, didn't realise how crap Toyota sat Nav was. BTW, I installed a dual USB switch in the lhs dash to power the HX1 and works great.
2012 Crystal Pearl Prado Altitude 150 Diesel Auto. Toyota mats and rear rubber mat. Toyo Open Country AT2's 265 65 R17 LT. OEM nudge bar. dual battery set up with Optima D34, rear power points front and rear Anderson plugs. Lightforce LED combi light bar. Kingsley side steps. Outback Ideas recovery points. Dr Air Pro 150 ltr air compressor. ARB 60 ltr fridge. GME 3550s UHF radio. Hema HX1.

Create own maps for Avenza pdf maps app

(This is a better - a real keyboard!!)

A couple of links for info:

Link to Aust govt Geoscience maps: http://www.ga.gov.au/search/index.html#/

How to create own geo referenced maps from scanned maps: https://ieqgis.wordpress.com/2014/05...a-map-in-qgis/
I have successfully used QGIS to create geotif maps which I then loaded onto my ipad (using itunes) - they ran fine with the Avenza app. However I've not been able to get QGIS to make a geopdf map - it sort of out puts a garbage file. Problem is that the geotif files can be quite large which chews up storage on an ipad which has no facility to add additional memory. That's where android tablets and phones have an advantage - can insert a large micro SD card & store maps on that. As I said earlier the Avenza android version limits own created maps to max of 3 in internal memory so have shuffle maps in/out off the SD card.

Both my ipad & phone have built in gps which is what the Avenza app uses i.e. the device is using the gps satellite signal not the mobile phone signal or internet connection.

The HEMA maps are available on the Avenza site so can download them and use them with the app. Expect that I will end up doing that and sticking with my ipad & phone instead of buying another device.

Someone else commented that an ipad can get pretty warm & I've experienced that too. However usually I have a passenger navigating & they keep the device out of the sun so I've never had it shutdown on overheat.

The HEMA device is purpose built for 4wd situations so expect it would be better engineered to handle heat, moisture etc.
