Modern engines tune themselves to the fuel your using and in most cases engines are designed to run on normal unleaded for example but....

Some engines do like a higher octane rating it is suck and see, for instance my wife has a Honda civic, if we run it on standard unleaded it pings, on the next one up no pinging. It should run happily on standard unleaded so maybe it has a dud knock sensor but easier to just use the mid fuel.

With my kia its happy with anything, it probably gets slightly better economy on premium but not worth the added expense.

They really only make a difference if your cars engine can tune itself to get the most out of them.

I haven't used a purpose designed octane booster before but have used injector cleaner many times and it certainly gives extra power. I notice it and it works way better than using 98 octane fuel. The car's got more responsive power in any rev range and any gear. I've always used Nulon injector cleaner once or twice in between oil changes with just normal unleaded petrol. It says one bottle treats two tanks, but that would be allowing for a small 45 litre tank in a Hyundai Excell for example as not to do damage, so one whole bottle goes in the 90 series 90 litre main tank (at the servo before I fill the tank up). Use a funnel to pour it into that reaches into your filler pipe otherwise it can be hit and miss getting it all into the correct fuel pipe properly if your car has two like mine. I'd only imagine octane booster would work a bit better again. I use it every now and again but never back to back in short succession without at least one untreated tank full in between as per the instructions.

When driving up the Toowoomba Range to go to work my car fades slowly in 3rd gear when hitting the innitial incline, but holds its revs in 3rd for longer until the gradient increases when using injector cleaner. It also accelerates and gets up to 100km/h noticeably faster when entering the highway from a stand still.

I was also talking to a mechanic once who had a friend that used injector cleaner all the time in his car and had done so for years with no issues. He got addicted to the little bit of extra power the mechanic was telling me and didn't like the power loss when driving without it. That would work out a bit dear after a while though at $10 or $11 a bottle. The fuel economy you get is marginally better when driving conservatively but not that good that it pays for the bottle.
