  • How to match Trailer tyres to Prado 150

    Hi All
I currently have a Challenge Camper trailer that's is registered under the 750 kg so no brakes.
I think when fully loaded it is over the 750 kg mark.
What I am wanting to do is match the tyres on the camper to the same as the Prado 150 GXL 2014 model and get brakes installed.
I am unsure how to go about this. Camper trailer currently runs 235/75/R15 and Prado has original size tyres 265/65/R17
I have looked at the height difference in the tyres and currently there is 1.7" (4.32cm) in height difference.
I am hoping some one can point me in the right direction to get this started.
Would I be better of getting the tyres and rim size matched then worrying about the brakes after this?
Who is best to speak to in regards to getting the tyres matched, Tyre place? I think after doing some research that the axle on the trailer may need replacing to match Prado offset etc?
By installing brakes would I be required to re-register the trailer as a Braked trailer?
Has any on else done something similar with a camper?
Main reason I want to do this is so I can carry 1 less spare when doing longer trips. Planning on doing a 4 week trip June 2018 to gibb river etc, Last time I did this I carried 2 spares for camper and 2 for the 100 Series I had at the time, but would love to be able to just carry the 3 spares in stead of 4.
Camper is due for new tyres and currently don't have a second spare for the Prado so was thinking I could buy a set of 4 rims and tyres to change over the camper and have 2 spares.
Thanks all in advance for any help or info.
    cheers Corny

You would need to change the hub to suit the Prado rims. You will also need to check wheel arch clearance when you fit Prado rims and tyres onto the camper.

Matching the camper's wheel track to the Prado is useful for sand driving. Check what the wheel track will be after you do the hub swap.

The axle and springs will probably need upgrading if you wish to change the registration to legally carry more than 750kg, as just fitting brakes will not allow you an upgrade to the carrying capacity if the other components aren't already capable.

Your best bet would be to talk to an engineering steel fabricating workshop as they will be able advise what needs doing and to provide you with the necessary paperwork to change the rego if they do the job for you.

      cheers Pete

Thanks Pete, I have emailed a few trailer places in Perth so will wait and see what they say, I am away at work at the moment so may have to ring around when I get back.

Alternatively you could speak to the Challenge Camper trailer agent in W.A. www.challengecamperswa.com.au who should be able to advise what needs doing and possibly recommend a place to get it done.

Have you asked the manufacturer of your camper trailer? They may have been asked this question before.

              Hi S
Yes I have been in contact with the WA Challenge camper people and they basically only sell or hire, and do not do any repairs or modifications in WA, The campers are made in SA. They gave me a contact where they have repairs done but have not heard back from them yet.
99% of their trailers are sold with either electric or mechanical brakes.
I brought my camper second hand, and it did not feature all the specs of their range and the original owner did not want the brake's.
I have owned the trailer for about 4 years now and have done the gibb before with out the brakes, It is just an upgrade I would like to get done, especially now seeing how the tyres need replacing.
I will contact challenge in SA and see what advice they offer.

                Hi Corny
Don't forget to take into account the extra height, upsizing tyres/wheels and springs may add to the bed base of your camper.
Therefore affecting the wall to floor height, or canvas drop off your bed base to the floor of tent.
I have spoken to a canvas workshop (CAS) in Para Hills West that were adding a deeper floor section to a soft floor camper after an axle and spring upgrade.
We considered lifting our Challenge built "Highway" camper, since its now being towed with the Prado and not the Camry wagon.
Braked axles are the go on your camper and electric controlled systems rather than over-ride will be my next specification.
From past experience with the SA factory of Challenge regarding upgrades or modifications, it seems that they would rather you purchase a new camper from them.....
                Cheers

Take your CT and go and see these guys, they should be able to give you some advice.

                  http://www.trailerparts.net.au/

You can change tyre profile to match the overall diameter (height). When I had my Prado with 17in rims and 70 series tyres, my CT runs 16 inch with 75 series tyres and they are the same height. The CT rims are 6 bolt that match. However, the off-set can be a problem with the Prado wheels sitting closer to the CT chassis rails.

The sub-frame (A frame and chassis) of the trailer may be rated to around 750kg as well, so it may notr be straight forward upgrading the trailer, but who knows until you get some expert advice.
Another thing to consider, Prado rims and tyres will likely be much heavier than the wheels you have on the trailer at the moment, and also the location where you store the current trailer spare may not accommodate the larger wheel. Just some other things to consider.

Corny you are doing the exact same as me at the moment.

I have a Jayco Dove which I am matching to the Prado. Long story short, I am replacing the A Frame, and running a new Chassis from Tow Ball to twin Rear wheel Carriers. Then upping the GTM and ATM.

I have bought 4x Hulix SR5 wheels (Same ET30 and stud pattern as 120 Prado) and will be ordering new axle shortly. Have spoken to Martins Trailer Parts, they are great but expensive. A lot can be bought from over east on ebay that is half the price (brakes, axle, springs).

This might be the best long run option for you too.

It will need to be re inspected to up the GTM/ATM.

This is a good spot for reading.

Also the chains here in WA need to be rated, and welded to the side of the A frame, which is not the case in some other states.
