  • Injector replacement under warranty - how to approach?

I've got a 25 month old Prado (bought Dec 14) that has done 56,000kms.

For a while I've thought that it sounds very "rattly" when it is cold and the RPM is between 1800 and 2500 RPM. Once it warms up it sounds ok. I mentioned it to Toyota last time it was serviced (Oct 16) and got them to give me a printout of the injector feedback values. Number 1 injector was showing -1.9 when it was warm.

I've just had the car down at Mitchell Bros 4x4 in Brookvale (Sydney) to get my bullbar fixed and Aaron called me up to say that they think I've got major problems with the injectors because the engine is so noisy. He says that Toyota won't do anything until the feedback values go beyond 3 and that the engine may blow up before that (that's my memory of what he said a few days ago so if it's incorrect please assume I have made the error not him).

I've noticed it blows a little bit of white smoke when it's cold - nothing major but it's visible in the drivers side mirror.

So... I've got it booked into Chatswood Toyota on 31st Jan for an assesment. I'll drop it off the night before so they can look at it when it is cold. I'll ask them to give me injector feedback values when it's cold and when it's warmed up.

Do they normally fail this early? I'm concerned because in less than 3 months the car is heading off for a 3-4 month lap of Australia (Sydney-Perth-Pilbara-Kimberley-Alice Springs-Sydney) and if it dies on the other side of the country it's going to be a huge problem.

Any tips on how to approach Toyota so I don't get fobbed off? Should I ask them to do anything else?

If anyone has a chip or a tune, Toyoda will decline warranty.

    It's unusal.

Did they pull them out at 40k & stuff up the job?

In a similar vein, does anyone think they could reject this kind of warranty claim if I have a catch-can fitted? I am wondering if I need to have it removed and put back to normal before taking it in... with the added expense of it all of course. I shouldn't effect the injectors at all, but still - Toyota being Toyota

        CamJam,
I personally wouldn't take the risk of giving Toyota a way out of refusing to carry out warranty work due to engine modifications. The warranty work cost is likely to be in the $1000's so I would say removing the catch can is the sensible thing to do and is probably cheap insurance. I would agree that the catch can shouldn't effect the injectors but why get into a situation where you have to argue your point with Toyota to maintain your vehicles warranty.

My dealer said that if I supply the catch can they would fit it during a service (at my cost) so my dealer is OK with catch cans.

They said warranty would not be affected

They may say it wont affect the warranty but the warranty is with Toyota and not the dealer.

Toyota's warranty is in writing so I would get it in writing from the dealer so that they assume responsibility if anything goes wrong and Toyota reject the warranty claim because of something the dealer fitted.

            Then again, I'm conservative,

Engine is standard - no chip or tune. I haven't fitted an EGR plate because I've been worried about the implications if something goes wrong under warranty and they blame it.

Chatswood Toyota did the 40k service - there is nothing on the service sheet about injectors (apparently they inspected the valve clearances but that would have been done warm because they didn't have it overnight). Looking at the service book it doesn't mention injectors at all.

                Peter,
My advice in regard to getting fobbed off by Toyota and possibly the dealer would be to have as much information as possible to hand. I believe that a couple of members on PP had very early engine failures (73,000kms in one case rings a bell) and one thread were an owner in WA have had their engine rebuilt twice at great expense. Print off the relevant threads and take them with you when you see the dealer, show them that you have some actual knowledge of the issue and demand that it is fixed correctly. Print off ####'s thread on the full requirements for an injector change so you don't get half a job done. I had to go through a similar situation with VW. We had a brand new golf gti with some well known problems, VW and the dealer stonewalled us and said the faults were normal, I printed off a number of threads on Gti websites, took them to VW and then VW actually fixed the car under warranty. I will never ever buy a VW or Audi again, even second hand. I would also do a bit of reading up on Australian consumer legislation, know what your consumer rights are up front, but hopefully it won't come down to that. I am no diesel expert, but I have a 120d4d with 155,000 kms on it, had a very hard previous life on a minesite, off road all day very day, but it runs reasonably quietly and absolutely no smoke ever. Your engine should be far better than mine. Good luck with it.

I am no mechanic but I have been told by two mechanics that "checking the valve clearances can be done two ways" the right way takes hours, the quick and dirty way is to remove the injectors

If they removed the injectors, as ####### mentioned before, that could be the cause of your problem.

I've just noticed that at the 40k service they listed:

                    PRT 2368130010 SEAL NOZZLE HOLDER 4 (QTY/HRS) $18.24
                    PRT 2368230020 GASKET NOZZLE HOLDER 4 (QTY/HRS) $18.64

From reading this thread I gather they have taken the tappet cover off to check the valve clearances and there is the possibility of contamination of the fuel system.

I'm pretty sure the loud rattle when cold was there before the 40k service.

I've just ordered a Techstream cable - I'll get some readings before I drop it off.
