  • Prado 120 V6 300,000 Km – what to check for a long trip?

Our family are off on a 4 week trip in the middle of the year from Perth to Alice via the Great Central Highway, then back via the Nullarbor. So don’t expect to do serious 4WD, but 10,000 km, lots of corrugations and towing camper trailers.

Another family are keen to join us, and for a vehicle they are looking at taking their parents Prado 120 which is a V6 petrol with around 300,000 Km. This has mainly been a city car, but that said they have just come visit us on our farm over Christmas that was a 1500 km round trip. I understand the person they are borrowing it off isn’t a car person, ie will not detect problems till something breaks, and has a “minimalist” attitude to servicing.

So the question – what goes wrong/what should we check on a 300,000 km 120 series Prado? Do people think it would be up for the trip, or have concerns? I’m just wary as if it breaks down, it gets expensive fast to fix it out back or get it shipped home. As well as ruining your trip.

The plan is to put the car in for a check-up with an experienced Prado mechanic to look it over – does anyone have a recommendation for a Prado savvy mechanic in Perth (south of the river)?

Firstly a good thorough service would be a good idea, then the usual checks before a big trip being suspension, tyres, general engine bay, hoses, belts and well pretty much anything you can check then check it! .... Something to think about crossing the great central highway would be the tyres on it as that road can be very corrugated in sections and a good set of AT's would be worth their weight in gold as would some upgraded suspension but being a borrowed car probably not going to happen......... I would say a standard prado will be find along that dirt road as along as your tire pressures are adjusted and speed is kept down.... You never know you may follow the grader and be lucky but of the few times I've crossed that way its been fairly rough in sections..... But defiantly manageable. You can be pretty far from help out there so carry some spares like hoses, belts, wheel nuts, fluids, and tools.... Spares you carry are a personal preference really as theres no point carrying a CV joint if you don't know how to change it in the bush... if you do get a flat out there make sure you check the wheel nuts after 50 and 100kms and every morning while doing your standard checks! its a beautiful part of the world out there so enjoy!
