  • Hard-wired (?) headlights and autolock feature

    Hi guys and gals,

I just purchased a 11/2013 (MY14) Prado GX Automatic with 50,000 km on the clock. I'm very happy with it so far, and as I'm slowly getting to know my new car, I've got a couple of questions that I hope you can help me with.

    1) It's an ex-government fleet car, and one of their policies apparently is that they always need to have the headlights on (even if the switch is set to off). I haven't been able to work out if this is just a setting that can be changed or if they have actually hard-wired it. The manual hasn't really helped much in this regard, but maybe I overlooked something. Has anyone come across this and knows how to fix it?

    2) I've always liked the "autolock" feature, i.e. the car locks itself after driving at a certain speed. I know for a fact that some Toyota cars have this feature in Australia, but I have not been able to find out if this setting can be changed for the Prado. I found this old (archived) topic, but was just wondering if anything has changed since then? Any intel on this would be fantastic! http://www.pradopoint.com/archive/in...p/t-17444.html

    Thanks

    Dex

PS: About to get the Prado serviced by Toyota tomorrow, so if any of these things can only be changed by the dealer, that would be good to know too!

No and no. The headlights run as DRLs from the factory. The is a thread somewhere with details on how to overcome this with a relay wired in to trigger from the dash lights but it isn't an option to activate or deactivate from the dealer.

The same goes for auto lock. Not an option on the prado.

      Thanks for your quick reply!

So just to make sure I understood you correctly, you're saying that all 150 Prados in fact have their headlights on all the time? Interesting - wasn't aware of this and don't recall it from other test drives I have done...

150 GX and GXL do. The VX and Kakadu have LED DRLs so their headlights operate as expected. The only way you can actually turn the headlights off, is to switch to parkers. But that turns on the dash lights and dims the head unit display.

Got it. Thanks, mate. Takes some getting used to, but I'm sure I'll get over it...

My 2010 GX doesn't have the headlights on all the time. That feature must have been added sometime after then.

eBay has one that does door lock, mirror fold and window up on lock.

I have a 2014 GXL 150 series and today, it locked itself automatically for the time. I have never noticed it. I think however it was due to the fact that the car was parked and locked, I opened it via the little button on the rear barn door, retrieved what I had to and closed the door (without locking it). I was in the shed and I heard the car beep. I thought "thats strange". So I unlocked it with my remote. About 30secs later, it locked itself again. I unlocked it again with the remote. 30 secs later it locked itself again. Very strange indeed.

Auto lock is normal for any car wth remote in case you hit the button and don't realise, if no door is opened it locks after 30sec. That's different to locking while moving off or putting the shifter in drive.
