  • Drooping Rear Springs on new 2.8 GXL

My 2.8 GXL is not even 1 year old and only 10k distance but I have noticed and measured a 30mm (1.2 inches) lower height in the (standard) rear right suspension compared to the rear left. The front is level. No load or major accessories on board and only 50 litres in the tanks. I will get this checked/resolved in an upcoming service, but would be interested if anyone else has had this issue.

My first thought is that you have a fault.

I have a 2.8 GX Auto, 35,000km, and 10 months old, and I measured the suspension today.

I have the following accessories and the kerb weight (full fuel no passengers is: 2,560kg

Full fuel B/Bar,winch TNN GUARDS Pioneer platform Tow bar TJM side steps Drawers/cutlery Waeco 50L empty F/slide 125Ahr battery

The initial new kerb weight (no accessories, full fuel no passengers on the day I bought the car was 2,225kg

So the vehicle is 335 kg heavier with fitted accessories.

Initial Suspension measurements(at stock kerb weight no accessories) : Suspension measurement today (at 2,560kg and 35,000km)

Front Right: was 758mm: now 740mm (18mm sag with weight of accessories and 35,000km)
Front Left: was 752mm: now 735mm (17mm sag with weight of accessories and 35,000km)
Rear Right: was 795mm: now 780mm (15mm sag with weight of accessories and 35,000km)
Rear Left: was 798mm: now 775mm (23mm sag with weight of accessories and 35,000km)

Average sag over 10 months and 35,000km and with 335kg or fitted accessories compared to new is 18mm, and less than 10mm variation in suspension between left and right.

I know it sounds obvious, (and as the front suspension is level I guess its unlikely) but be sure the vehicle is on level ground when you do the measurement, but if you have 30mm lower on the right there could be something wrong.

My suspension measurements (in accordance with what I think the majority of people do on this forum) are taken using a tape measure, measuring from the bottom edge of each alloy rim, with the tape measure passing the middle of the alloy wheel, up to the lower edge of the wheel arch immediately above (in a straight line).

    I hope that helps?

Let us know how you go.

Thanks for the detail. I will have it checked and resolved at the next service, but your detail is very useful. I might if the left is 'high' or the right side is 'low' or a bit of both. I measured it in my garage, so it should be flat. I might also put a spirit level on various check points towards the rear e.g. roof, tow bar, bumper.

Thanks a lot for the reply here! I had a similar issues too and I solved it by using new coil springs from http://www.sterling-springs.co.uk/. I wonder if it is coomon for these cars... It is not a very nice situation...

Very often see a newish Prado driving towards me and notice the back end sagging. Looks like they have a caravan attached to the rear, but never do...
All the more reason to upgrade the suspension straight away and never look back!

Thanks for your post Ozdriver. I have a 2016 2.8 Kakadu with13,000 k's on the clock with the same problem. It's currently sagging to the driver's side, 20mm at the front and 19mm at the back. (Keep in mind the Kak has self levelling air suspension at the back, if that makes a difference).

I noticed the sag at the 1,000 k service and notified the dealer, so obviously it came out of the factory like this. They said it was the KDSS and they'd make arrangements to fix it. They rang me back and said Toyota Australia would only fix it after it hit 20mm sag.

At the 10,000k service it was over 20mm sag. This time they said the problem was the springs and Toyota Japan was "looking into it". My recent enquiries at the (new Canberra) dealer indicate Toyota is still "looking into it. Coil springs are hardly new technology. They either do the job or they don't.

I smell a rat and I'm about to start making some noise, so I'd appreciate hearing from any one else that has a similar problem.
Thanks for your responses Lordsword and Trevordd, but when you pay this much money for a new car you don't expect to have to replace parts.

Please let me know how you go at the service Ozdriver.

I put poly air bags in, at 5psi it's sits about the same height as any 150 with empty fuel tanks (when mine are full)

My car is due for a service in about 1 months time and I have pre-warned about the issue. I'll see what they plan to do first and let this forum know. My longer term plan is to change to new and better springs/shocks but not quite yet (leaning towards medium load Dobinsons springs with their new mono-shock).
