Further, I don't think it does a good job of circulating the cold air - one end freezes up (and frosts after about 48 hours use and then runs inefficiently) and the other end is disturbingly warm(well, not cold). Obviously, this was a significant purchase and, given it "still works", not one I'll be replacing in the short term. Wish I bought something else...
Happy to take tips from more learned Waeco owners!
I ordered the CFX 65DZ but cancelled the order after I read the manual online and realised it only had one compressor so it isn't easy to monitor and control two temps. Ended up going with the CFX-50 and have been very happy.
Where did you buy the 65-DZ? I reckon it's false advertising for waeco to call it a dual zone and you should be able to swap it. If it was from one of the big chains you might have a chance.

I forgot to mention one of the key features to check is the power consumption, particularly if you are looking to run off your primary battery and have the fridge cut out when battery charge drops. The good brands have an auto cut off which you can set at various levels of remaining battery charge, depending on which battery you are using (primary, secondary)

I was told when we purchased our CFX50 that they were a lot more economical than the CF range of waecos, and than the Engel range - but that was from a Waeco sales person, so who knows if that's true.

We get 36-48 hrs off a portable 48 Amp Hr Thumper battery, after we run off the camper 80 Amp Hr for 3-4 days. After that it's move to re-charge or manage with solar panels if you have them.

Don't think it's really false advertising. It works on the principal of the cold air from the freezer section spilling through the vents in the divider to provide cool air to the fridge section. I've only really used mine as a combined fridge/freezer and never had a problem with it. We bought the DZ because we only wanted to have to carry one fridge. We don't have a camper to spread the load so every bit of storage space in the cargo bay is precious.

Having 2 separate compartments with separate temperature controls like some of the Primus fridges have would be handy though, if I was to buy again I would probably go that route.

I've had my "Bushman" for over 8 years & never had a problem with it. I like the fact that I can change to the low lid when it's used in the Mrs' XV (35L), or step up to full size (55L) when in the Prado. http://www.bushman.com.au/fridges/the-original-sc35-52

I have two Engels; a 60 litre in the camper trailer and a 40 litre in the Prado. Not a single problem with either of them (have I just jinxed myself?)

We bought the camper when we retired, nearly 7 years ago, and it's been on the road for more than 3 years in that time - so the fridge has had a good workout. The 40 litre went into the Prado when we bought that 5 years ago and it too has had a fair flogging.

I haven't had any other brand of fridge but would strongly recommend the Engels.

Our trusty Trailblazer is now 17 years old (60lt). Been all over our great land and will continue for many more.
As others have said you can't skimp on quality.

Our second fridge is a very old Autofridge eutectic 39 lt. Runs every day in the Prado for work keeping my water bottles cold. You can't buy these new anymore which is a pity they are a great fridge.

With most things buy the best you can afford. Give it a good power supply, don't skimp on the cable and be happy.

Another thread mentioned Evacool, any comments? Obviously not an Engel or Waeco, where does it sit with the rest?

I just sold 2 40 litre Engel fridges after having them for 10 years + and only lost $80 on each fridge. I sold them to upgrade to a 60 litre legacy. In 2013 I went to Cape York for 3 weeks and used 1 Engel as a fridge and the other as a freezer and that's the only time I've used them that way. I considered getting a combination fridge freezer but just thought I would regret it. So I think you are better getting your meat vacuum sealed at the butcher or buy your own sealer before you go away and just put it your fridge, properly sealed air tight meat will last, I was a butcher for 20 years. Also Engel have the least draw on your battery. Engel is the was to go, you'll buy it once and enjoy it for a lifetime. Cheers mate

I'll put in another vote for the Bushman. A few months ago I spent far too long researching which fridge to get and the Bushman was the one that seemed to get almost universally good reviews. I've had it for a few trips now and love it so far - simple design, intuitive temp setting & display, built like a tank, genuinely flexible capacity with alternative lids (35-52 litres - works really well actually), sturdy handles, tie down points, AC adapter. Only hitch was the cost was nearly $1300 and they don't seem to do discounts, unlike the more common brands.

I have a 3 row seat Prado and bought a ARB Fridge as the lid can completely unclip and slide off, leaving full access into the fridge even with the minimal clearance.

My parents brought my Engel in 1977 (payed $299) it has lived in the rear of my 4x4's since 1985...
Never been out of the car for more than an hour to clean in the last 14 years,
only out of the old cars for a day or so when traded..
I think there are better fridges out there now..But lets see in 40 years if they are still going.
If I had to buy a new fridge tomorrow there is only one i would get Engel
                          @$299 / 40 years =$7.475 a year ....cheap fridge
                          Cheers

Fridges - Which one should i get?

I've had my Engle for about 20 years. When in use it sits in the tray of the Landcruiser. Other than the original Engle canvas cover I bought for it when new, I've never worried about covering it up, so it's seen its fair share of bulldust in the dry season, and downpours in the wet, along with quite a few thousand kilometres of corrugations over the years. When not needed, it sits down the back in the hot shed.
The only issues I've had are the zipper on the cover wore out (The Engle is used as the beer fridge as well, so hate to think how many times the poor old zipper had been opened & closed!) and it stopped once due to a bad connection in the 12v plug that goes into the fridge, but this turned out to only be a bit of "green death" built up over the years on the surface of one of the pins due to it sitting in the rain in the back if the tray (That was years ago, a quick clean up of the pins and a spray with Inox & it's been ok since).
Needless to say, the Engle's paid for itself many times over.
I'm not sure what the quality of the various manufacturers are these days, but I know quite a few years ago, most people where I was, using the fridges in the same conditions as mentioned above, would mostly use either Engles or Trailblaza's.

I have the ARB 65 litre fridge. Reasons for picking this one: don't intend getting trays/racks or fridge slide so wanted something I cpuld get in and out easy but fits nice & snug. Fits perfectly on LHS with length about 800 (takes up half the width of rear cargo area). Hinge is at short side so opens up perfectly while still in the back, easy to get stuff out. On rubber mat, doesn't move around. Plenty of travel in the Flinders with no problems with fridge moving. Wanted something that I could get in and out easily as the golf clubs spend most of the time in the back. Great fridge, cools really well.

sooo......ive done the unthinkable, i purchased a fridge.....
i ended up buying the Primus Mammoth 74L fridge.

tested it, works a treat at home. will give some more info once i actually use it in the field, in a car environment.

now ..... fridge slides....... is there anything out there that would go in the back of a prado with a drop down function that would clear the back bumper?
i was looking at the clearview ones, but not a lot of info, i guess i could stop it at bumper level, and be happy with that, just not sure what the rest of you think or what you have.

                                cheers
