  • 265/60R18 Tyres - intitial thoughts on the Dynapro ATM

    G'day folks

Had to re-register couldn't remember my old username - not to worry.

So, I've been reading lots of stuff on here (and elsewhere) re. tyres in the 265/60R18 size. My Kuhmo ROAD VENTURE SAT KL61 tyres had started to let go on wet roundabouts and was getting quite a few traction control interventions on dry roads - despite trying different pressures over their ~40,000km (2 years) on the car. So basically I have 4 tyres with 30% + tread-wear left and they're skidding like a dog trying to escape on a lino floor. My conclusion is it doesn't matter what tread depth is left; when the rubber composition throws the towel in it's time to get new tyres. The man at the tyre place said, "yeah, in the Prados there's not really enough weight in the rear to keep the Kuhmos from sliding". Fair enough I thought.

Ok, after my reading / researching it came down to the Cooper AT3 (LT) or Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 (not available in Xtra Load in 18" sizes - yet!). I chose the latter. Why? Whilst I really wanted to try an LT construction (Cooper) but research suggested bang-for-buck the Dynapro were the go. Whilst they certainly look marginally skinnier on the car, it's probably because of the squarer shoulder-profile.

Like a lot of us here, getting new tyres makes our cars feel different, mostly better. This has been my experience with the Dynapro. Even though they are rated at 114 load (compared to 110 of the Kuhmo), the ride is substantially more comfortable and handling is sharper, less understeer. The Kuhmos were not a comfortable tyre; mated to a ARB 30mm lift, it was like riding in a Nissan G60 on Dunlop Roadtrack Majors. Perhaps it was the hardening of the rubber compound? Dunno.

If people are interested, I'll post more observations in the forthcoming weeks.

2012 VX Diesel, Steinbauer thingy, air bag thingies, ARB suspension, Redarc battery and trailer brake thingies ... I'm sure there's other stuff, but I've gotta be somewhere....

Good to know, these are my first pick when the roadys are done. Also had a good run with them on my 2011 navara.
Arb colour code deluxe bar, safari snorkel, lightforce venom HID's, GME uhf remote face, redarc tow pro, redarc bcdc 1240, pioneer platform, 40" curved light bar, dual battery, 3" SS exhaust, EGR mod, trans cooler upgrade, provent catch can, scangauge 2, diesel care secondary fuel filter, Tin's bash plates and actuator gaurd, 2in Bilstien and kings lift,

Hi, I have 265/70/r17 on mine. At first I had major traction control issues wet and dry conditions. The extra rolling diameter was making the traction control go nuts on the most simplest of corners.
Have you changed the diameter if your tyres? Are all your tyres the same make and size? Toyota have a patch to update the ECU to accept the extra rolling diameter which cured my problem. But I see that 265/60/18 are virtually identical in diameter as the 265/65/17 (OEM). So this may not be your problem.

I currently have Hankook DynaPro's on my car and they are pretty good so far. 40,000km and not even half worn yet. Haven't had any issues at all with them. Traction is good and will give you plenty of warning when starting to slide.
I'm not real keen on Coopers because of the price. At almost double the cost of a Hankook but I bet they wont last double as long. But if your looking at the tyre load rating then you may have to pay a bit more. If you don't tow a big caravan of boat then why pay the extra?
Maybe consider Yoko Geolander's. I got 60k+ on issues. They were squealing by the end but they still held the road without letting go.
As for Kumo? They're only marginally better than a cheap Chinese tyre. I would put then on a Nissan or Great Wall but that's about it.
As for the harshness of your ride, Maybe you have chosen too stiffer spring rate and dampening. If you told ARB to setup your suspension for caravan or boat, batteries and winch, 7 passengers + luggage then its going to bounce like a flea on a flat dog when unloaded. Not very nice at all. If you car suspension isn't level e.g. jacked up in the rear, then you will tend to understeer. You will need to adjust your front wheel caster to compensate. Most wheel aligners will just set to factory spec. This will not do as you have modified the ride characteristics of your car.

I have Been running The Dynapro ATM 265/60/18 for about 20k . The have seen some very sharp rocky terrain ,very slippery clay , dirt tracks and alot of bitumen. They have performed better than expected and have hardly worn , no chips etc.
