G' day Adrian500 its manual and has a manual radiator no cooling tank for tranny oil no auto fittings definitely a manual diesel radiator as the petrol ones have hose necks on opposing sides.

Very odd overheating issue 1KZ TE 2001 prado

Bit of a mission to check the hidden welsh plugs, they're hidden behind the oil cooler/warmer.
Could be the 2.7 petrol that has pipes same as the KZ. When I got my rad there was two options, petrol or diesel and to me they looked identical apart from the number of tube rows.
A 4-row would be the duck's nuts.

Yeah carco the petrol and Deisel radiators look the same except the hose necks are at opposite ends top and Bottom.
4 core will definitely be a positive regardless if it fixes the issue or not but I won't know for another week till supplier opens.
I'm still open for any ideas on what else maybe the causing the issue as the current new radiator was done the same time as the head.
In theory it shouldn't be the issue being a genuine unit that comes with these models but I'll keep at it illuminating everything as I enjoy wasting money and time it appears, I'm just determined to beat this.

just trying to help , the simple things are often overlooked . You know there's a coolant drain down by the oil filter ? i have often wondered why it's there because the pathetic amount of fluid it releases after the rads been dropped makes it not worth undoing . But maybe its a sort of catch pit ?

Its a little brass nut on the block its too low to be for air and as i said it appears to have no purpose . Once i opened mine but i have never bothered again though i've had the coolant out plenty of times . I was thinking if you do have a blockage you could leave a hose running in your rad all day and it might just push something out of that drain .

Thanks all for the input, i have finally resolved the odd overheating problem after two years.
Remembering after a cracked head i had qualified mechanics replace the HEAD, RADIATOR and thermostat.
That's when the overheating prob started remembering only at 100kph on a hot day engine temp only dropping as speed dropped.
I then cut more air flow into the bull bar changed thermostats 2 more times, new water pump, new viscous fan, new hoses etc etc.
So here's the answer i took it to a Radiator specialist to have it looked at and get a four row radiator installed, upon pulling up he runs his hand over the radiator, and finds that the middle of the NEW RADIATOR is cold and tells me he'll pull it apart and have a look at it first before ordering a four row.
I get a phone call to come have a look at it I've found your problem he said.
the NEW RADIATOR was that full of crap from an obvious lack of flushing of the cooling system and heater core when the new head was done it had a limited amount of flow oddly enough (sarcastically) rearing it's ugly head at speed on a hot day.
Exit one ROOTED RADIATOR Enter another NEW RADIATOR (standard genuine) a proper flush through the Engine, heater core, thermostat and bugger me dead cool happy motoring.
Moral of the story "IF IT AINT DONE RIGHT IT WON"T RUN RIGHT"
Qualified registered mechanics hey!
At least they came to the party and covered the cost of the new radiator and installation,
The other good side is i know I've fitted a new viscous fan hub & water pump properly myself introduced more air flow and the cooling system is now 110%

Well Leigh let me put your amazed mind to rest!
That car had been back to the repairer more times than i can count being told to fix the problem.
Only to have them come up with no answer as to why it was doing it they gave up trying that's when i replaced what i replaced so i didn't have a larger cost issue.
as i said this went on for two years and i reached my own boiling point and fronted them again to sort it out now with a positive result.
so it amazes me that you assumed i left the repairer without returning time after time trying to resolve the problem.

As I wrote was not having a go at you, you followed the issue through with repairer. Many never go back, they are fobbed off with "just a coincidence" or they simply assume it is some new issue and go replacing this and that to try and sort it out.
If someone has just had service work done on their car, and when they get it back a problem starts occurring that wasn't their before there's a very good chance the mechanic has stuffed up! They should do what you have done, hound the mechanic that did the work to find the problem, don't go off on a tangent assuming its a new problem unless the mechanic can prove he didn't cause it!
