  • Kakadu E-locker into VX

    Merry Christmas PPer's!

Looking at throwing an e-locker into the back of my '14 VX 150, was going to go with a Harrop.... those that have the Optitron dash will see that there's two empty spots when you're in low-range for when you engage the centre diff lock, but also one for (what I presume is) the rear locker as fitted to a Kakadu.

Has anyone tried to fit the factory Kakadu e-locker to a VX? I'm not 100% sure, but have a feeling that the VX has the same wiring loom as the Kakadu, so in theory all one would need to do is purchase the locker from Toyota, fit it and simply clip into the existing wiring harness...?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Sandstorm.

I have a 2016 Kakadu with the factory rear diff lock and I would avoid the Toyota locked diff like the plague.

I also have an aftermarket ARB air locker in the front and this shits all over the Toyota diff.

The Toyota diff can only be engaged in neutral, in low range and used at very low speeds so is as good as useless compared to air locker which can be engaged when needed in high range and at any speed.

I have researched extensively to replace the rear Toyota diff with an air locker but for the Kakadu have found this is an impossibility due to other electronic wizzardry.

Would love to be able to do it though!

    Cheers.

David, is that ARB locker a new addition to your Prado? how do you rate performance of the front locker against the rear? I've been thinking about getting one and undecided whether to go front or rear..

You will be better off with a rear locker first.
I don't have a problem with the factory Toyota unit, you can't enguage in high range but I don't really see the need, Even in the sand I would run my 79 unlocked in high range and never had a drama it's more tyre pressure and momentum lockers at speed in sand can actually promote digging in and getting stuck

personally I feel you need lockers in lowrange

The only time I used lockers in high range was more from being lazy and going faster than I should of

If I had a VX I would be looking at an Elocker over the others Brands

As I said the factory fitted rear Toyota e locker is as good as useless as you must be stopped, in neutral and low range before you can engage it and then it is very difficult to unengage simply.

I often sit still for 5 minutes trying to turn the stupid thing off.

Go for an ARB air locker front and rear (can't do this in the rear of the Kakadu to my knowledge yet) which are excellent performers at relatively low cost.

            Advantages are:

            1. can use at any speed in low or high range.
            2. comes with the engine mounted compressor which is really useful for tyre inflation.
            3. simply switch on or off when you need it.
            4. warranted for 5 years not three like the useless Toyota piece of crap.

If anyone knows how I can ditch the Toyota e locker and replace with a more useful one please let me know.

            Regards.

            David

Definitely rear locker first and yes the ARB air locker in the front was added after I purchased the Kakadu.

              Cheers.

                Hi PHS.

Of course I do not need to use the diff locks in high range but have found that if you unexpectedly hit quicksand and decelerate rapidly and need some extra grip then in high range you can quickly flick the e lockers on to save you as you can't drop into low range without stopping.

                Regards.

                  Hi David,

I can understand how the locking and unlocking can be frustrating and I guess the high option would be good.... but you know as well as I do that people would use it when they should nt and they would brake.

On my 79 series I Never had to use lockers in high range unless I was not paying attention or simply lazy.

That said I could not justify the cost of attempting to put a factory locker in so I would look at an E locker ( which you have to stop to enguage ) over an ARB airlocker, too many headaches with these units.

                    Hi David

have you had any other issues with the rear E locker?
i was wondering if these rear lockers could be fitted into another car without the electronic trickery and just hot wired to run on a on/off switch ?

                    cheers James

Hi James. I have not had any issues with the Toyota e locker which works fine when crawling up and over things at low speeds.I want to be able to engage my lockers (like I do with he front air locker) at speed when I start getting into trouble, before I get bogged on a steep incline (e.g. Calcup Hill!) It's ok to say you do not need lockers at higher speeds which is true from one perspective but as I said above, I want to be able to engage them BEFORE I get stuck in a compromising position. With both lockers on at low speed, my Prado Kakadu will out climb most things with ease, especially on very rough, holey terrain using the DVSS suspension which provides awesome wheel articulation.

maybe you can disconnect it from the factory loom and fit an aftermarket wiring switch

i will let you know soon how it works

                          Hey Razorback81,
how did this project go for you? What did it end up costing you? I have a 2009 150 GX and would love to put a rear locker and have been wondering what the most cost effective way to do this is?

i did fit the later complete diff set up into my 120 series ( had to cut mounts & weld them on to the new diff to make it back to coil spring from the airbag set up

tested it on the Cape trip , went awesome, can set the locker at any speed in or out ( using the aftermarket switch set up )

i will say they will get water into the motor , so you need to extend the breather or pull it apart & fit better water proof grease
i had to repair mine after it had a few swims

                            cheer James
