    G'day all,
    Had a slight hiccup yesterday. I went to start the car in the afternoon and it cranked, fired a couple of times and stopped, but then kept cranking and started. This all occurred with 1 push of the start button.
    I turned if off and started it again and it started completely normally.
    Subsequent starts were all normal and there is no running issues at all.
    From my limited knowledge it sounds like a fuel supply issue, and I did note that I tried the primer pump on the fuel filter housing and got 10 good pumps before it began to firm up which leads me to believe there was air in the lines somehow. I have an aux fuel filter so there is some modification to the fuel system. However I have had this system installed for 6-8 months with no issues.
    Whilst I was installing the trans cooler the car was in the 'on' position for a few mins without the car running which may, or may not have made a difference.

    Can anyone suggest anything to check? Or does it sound like I'm on the money with my assessment. Or maybe it was a once off and the D4D being a D4D...

    What sort of aux fuel filter. I had trouble with a fuel manager post filter after about 18 months on a 120 series. Diesel mechanic who diagnosed picked the problem straight away, as he is not a fan of the fuel manager system preferring the screw type filter.

      Yeah it's a FM100. What did your mechanic find?

        Mine was a 2 micron filter and he just bypassed it. Car would not hold fuel pressure with it in and would not start at all. He was the second mechanic to look at it.
        Sold the 120 not long after the trouble occurred. He had 2 theories. First he does not like the way the fuel manager filter is attached to its base as this can lead to troubles. Second it could have been the 2 micron filter restricting fuel flow and causing pump wear so with the extra restriction it could not pressurise the fuel line thus when it was removed the pump was less restricted.
        He was an old type diesel mechanic in Alice Springs and knew what he was talking about. His advice was to use a donaldson or similar and only a pre filter.

          Interesting thoughts. I too do not like the mounting system of the FM100. I run a 5 micron however.
          I'll certainly keep an eye on it. Someone else recently described a similar problem and it was found to be their starter. I only recently (20,000 ago) reconditioned mine. Might be a recurrence.
