Speed through the shallow river and no snorkel sprayed enough water into the intake to kill it. He's a fan of snorkels now.

Snorkel was the first batch of mods on our 120.

Would still have been cheaper to fix the Jeep than to trade it. Maybe the insurance paid out.

Sucking water in won't happen first. And a snorkel won't stop water coming it once the airbox is under, the airboxis a vacuum and not airtight around the sides it will leak badly (but it won't because the car floats way before that).
I don't think so. I've done a number of water crossings when I lived on Cape York where water was at bonnet level, the vehicle was not floating and I'm very sure that I would have sucked water into the engine without a snorkel. In fact I watched a vehicle the same as mine but without a snorkel hydraulic his engine crossing the Wenlock River minutes before I went through with no problems at all. In all of the many river crossings I've done I have never had water in my filter/airbox.

I think the view that snorkels help with dust is the furphy.

Um, yes, extensively. Many tens of thousands of km's - Plenty Hwy, Great Central Rd, Tanami Track, Oodnadatta Track, Birdsville Track, Anne Beadell, Connie Sue Hwy, Gary Junction Rd, Binns Track, CSR, Madigan Line, French Line, Vic high country, Gulf of Carpentaria, Flinders Ranges, etc, etc.. Lived on Cape York for 5 years, have driven Weipa to Cairns, PDR and telegraph track, etc., many times. All with snorkels and have had plenty of air filters choked with dust.

A snorkel may help a bit, but probably not as much as people are led to believe.

Ok, so maybe it doesn't help as much as some people think, but that doesn't make it a furphy.

In the Flinders, and around Broken Hill, before the snorkel was in, the air filter was clogged after a trip. Never happeneed since the Snorkel went in.

The snorkel picks air out of the open air a couple of metres above the ground. The standard air intake is a lot lower and does pick up more dust and heat (and water if you are in deep water)

Fair enough. My response was mostly aimed at the previous assertion that snorkels are not for deep water crossings.

If you’re not tail gating in dusty conditions but still following closish, or passing traffic, you still get a lot of dust at windscreen height & above. Not air that if free of dust I’m afraid. Don’t believe all the marketing hype from businesses that want your $600-$700 for one. They do protect from water ingress though. I can vouch for that and any other car I’ve seen with one fitted that’s done deep water crossings in cape york. But as for dust, but if a myth there. Dust is light and gets pulled up over roof height quite easily by the tyres and drag. If you’ve followed anyone or passed anyone on a dusty road you’d know exactly what I’m talking about.

We have driven our outback cars for years.

If you have a snorkel, the amount of dust intake is way less than the standard intakes on the cars. The dust rise up and then slowly drops down and flows off the road if there is any wind.

Before we had a snorkel on the Prado driving around the Flinders, it was easy to see the amount of dust in the intake filter. When we had a snorkel in the same place it has WAY less dust in the intake filter.

Yes, if you follow closely with other vehicles in the dirt roads, you will have plenty of dust with and without a snorkel. That's never been a way we drive around in the outback.
