  • Dealer warranty when buying a demo starts from your purchase date in WA

While looking at demo cars, i came across the following Gov of WA - Warrenties on demo cars

    Specifically:
WA’s Motor Vehicle Dealers Act states that the purchaser of a demonstrator vehicle is entitled to the full time period of the manufacturer’s warranty from the date of purchase. This means the manufacturer’s warranty does not start from the time the vehicle was registered by the dealer. It starts from the date that you sign the contract to buy it.
When i brought my car, which was a demo with 300km, i asked about the start date of the warranty, which the dealer said was the registration date of the vehicle. I send him the attached link

    Warranty

    Steve.
This is an interesting post especially for PP members in WA. I too wondered about the warranty issue when I bought my Prado in 2015 (ex demo model) with 6K on the clock. Last week I had the 18 month (30K km service done) with only 15K on the clock. Toyota's warranty seems to commence from the date of first registration regardless how long it's been sitting in the car yard or in the case of demos, when the dealer decides to put it up for sale.

      Hi Doug,

Warranty is different from service interval. As stated in the link, the warranty will count the original mileage you brought the car with, but the start of the 3 year time part of the vehicle warranty will start the date you became the registered owner. In my case that is only 6 weeks, but you may find with 6k on your clock out may be many months.

This is very interesting. Dealerships don't want you to know about this one I'm sure.

Why not? The Dealer isn't paying the warranty claims, TMCA is.

I'd think (hope) the issue is one of ignorance on the part of the dealer, not deception.

I don't think it is. I think the dealer is correct and you will find the car has never been registered and therefore the warranty starts from registration date.

If the op wants to argue its when he signed the contract to buy thats fine, but that generally happens before the registration date, so he is reducing his warranty.

What do you mean - the original post was about a registered demonstrator vehicle?
              Cheers

No the post was about a demo vehicle. Just because its a demo doesn't mean it was registered. Most demo vehicles are not registered.

The dealers use 'trade plates', which are basically generic registration plates they can use on any roadworthy vehicle to take them on public roads without having to register them.

In this case Steve advised in his second post it was registered six weeks earlier.

Well aware of what a trade plate is, and personally have never seen an SA dealer demo'ing a prado with them on either...

Second hand prados'- definately, brand or near new demonstrators, never.

You are right, I skimmed over the second post.

In 2004 I bought a demo Hyundai Santa Fe in Queensland with 500km on it. I received full warranty for the time but not in addition to the kilometres that were already on the car when I bought it ($1,000 cheaper than new price). At the time the warranty was 5yrs or 130,000km which was an Australian industry first. So basically I got a warranty of 5 yrs or 129,500km from when I purchased the car.

On a side note the salesman was a nice bloke. He didn't do the hard sell, but when I was originally looking at the car he agreed with everything I was saying. I could've said in the same sentence that being a staunch religious Catholic was a good thing and so was having 5 wives in marriages not legally recognised in this country and he would've whole heartedly agreed.
