  • front wheel bearings

Has anyone an exploded view of the front wheel bearing assembly which shows the orientation of the spacers?
I had the old bearings pressed out and new ones installed about 500k ago.
One side is perfect, the other is completely destroyed.
Wondering if a spacer was installed back to front as they have a taper only on one end.
    All very mysterious………and expensive.

        Thanks mate.
I had that one too but as you can see, the thick spacer isn't drawn clear enough to tell which way it should be facing.
The way I've installed them now is as per my photos and she's running well again.
If that thick spacer is installed facing the other way, it becomes an interference fit onto the drive hub and there's no way to tell how much pre-load the press has applied to the bearing.
That was what killed my bearing so fast.
I posted the pics in case anyone else has this dilemma.
The other thing is not to over tighten the drive shaft nut, you'll just increase the pre-load.

My right hand front wheel bearing packed up at 208.000km. On a Sunday preceding a long weekend in outback South Australia. Seems like these bearings need to be replaced at 200.000Km.

Like all things mechanical, it would depend on the conditions the car has seen.
My bearings had done 450,000ks and were fine.
Unfortunately you can't tell that until you've destroyed them, pressing them out to inspect.
            Expensive process.

That's more a Jeep thing where they'd need to be replaced at 200,000km.... Along with the entire front end (mandatory) and many other niggling issues with those heaps of sh*t. Jeeps even break engine mounts accelerating out of the driveway to hard, and they break sway bar links when you take them to a fourby park unless you disconnect them prior. I guess my point is that our cars are made much better than Jeeps. I've done 356,000km in my car with several outback trips up its sleeve and the bearings still appear fine. I wouldn't expect they'd need to be replaced at 200k. Your car could've had a rough life maybe? Done a lot of corrugated roads and rough tracks?... Possibly with too high pressure in the tyres causing more jarring and shortening the life of the bearings? Suspension that's too stiff wouldn't help either.

From my short experience with the 90's bearings, they're a nice strong cassette unit.
But they don't like the axle nut overtightened nor do they like deep water, the seals are good but not really suited to swimming.
It's easy to see if a bearing has been drowned, but the over tightening of axle nut is more difficult.
It can happen, for example if new ball joints or arm bushes are fitted at which time the half shaft is removed from the hub.
When she's reassembled, do you re-torque to the factory 170 ft lbs on bearings that have been running for many k's or do you set them at a touch less.
The 170ft lbs is setting the preload presuming they're new bearings, and they're not.

To be fair, the Jeeps seem to have a fanatic following that replace wheels and tyres with much larger overall diameter and offset compared to our Prados. The stresses on the standard bearing module becomes a high wear item. Replacing the bearing itself isn't possible as far as I have seen. they call it a 'unit bearing module'
