  • Sat Sleeve Hot Spot

Hey all, just wondering if anyone has tried a Sat Sleeve on their mobile phone and used it as a hot spot to their laptop/tablet/ipad?

I haven't done it (I have a Thuraya sat phone not the sleeve) but Thuraya data is super expensive - $5 per MB on the phone plans from Pivotel. It was strongly suggested to me that it wasn't the right service if you wanted data...

A lot of caravanners use mobile data and they try very hard not to ! Quite expensive and prone to drop outs in fringe areas so you have to start again.

The sleeves do work as emergency sat phones but Irridium with a roaming post paid Telstra sim seem the most popular.

If you get a Casual Pivotel account on the Thuraya network (Sat Sleeve or XT Lite) it's $15/month for the connection then you're charged for anything you use. The benefit is that people can call you for normal mobile rates - ie you have a 04xx xxx xxx number which doesn't cost you when people call you. I believe if you use a roaming Telstra SIM in an Irridium phone that you pay for the incoming calls as well.

Ignoring the data side of things, it depends on how often you think you'll need to use it and who you want to speak with. If you can organise with friends/family/work to not pick up calls from your satellite number but for them to call you straight back that makes the Thuraya one really cheap!

Hi guys thanks for the replies. Was thinking it would be good to use on a laptop to access the internet?

It would be - problem is the data is so expensive. I was looking around at it and couldn't see a cost effective way to get any sort of everyday usable connection.
