  • Auto trans temperature guage

I want to install a temperature guage on the auto transmission. Suggestions as to brand and type would be welcome. Also, is fitting these things a DIY job?

I would suggest a scangauge II as it also has other useful features such as EGT value etc.

Over 100 views and only one reply - this must be a difficult topic. Thanks Cuda I will have a look at the Scangauge II.

Because most of the "views" probably agree with Cuda so no need repeat

I would prefer a real gauge that reads constantly with no gizmickery

IMHO these should be standard in the dash for vehicles of this caliber, massively important information that everyone towing or 4x4ing needs and should drive to when operating an autogomagic

Geeexl, I agree with Happy.... Had one from them in the 80 series for 15 years. Showed exactly what you are chasing. Now digital or analog gauge.

What is interesting, is that all of the sensors and hardware is already installed on every Prado ready to display on the dash somehow. Toyota just choose not to make the info available on the dash screen so we all have get a scangauge or similar just to read it which is silly. I Bought the Ultraguage Bluetooth unit for my car mounted iPad and now that displays the two trans temps, battery voltage, fuel pressure plus a heap more in simulated graphical gauges. They could have easily made a page on the centre factory display to show all of this stuff.

There are two sensors in your gearbox.
                  1. Torque Converter
                  2. Main gearbox.

If you are towing please install a cooler.

The sensors control how and when gear changes happen.

The scangauge web site has all the codes to make this easy.

                    Rusty,

Which code should we be using, I seem to run very high temps on the ATT code, daily driving around 80-90, and any sort of incline up to 115 (without towing) - maybe I have the incorrect code loaded? Thanks

I can't speak for Rusty, but with mine the main sump temp gets up to 80-90 eventually once the engine is hot as the fluid is cooled by the engine coolant. If you see 115 on an incline then that is the torque converter outlet temp you are seeing. It rises very quickly when under higher load but settles back quickly at it mixes with the cooler sump ATF. A trans cooler mounted inline after the engine radiator's heat exchanger will pull the main sump temp down a lot. Maybe 20 degrees.

                        Rusty.
This is an obvious area for thought yet I do not see posts where people are cooking their auto boxes. Am I wrong? are people having problems? There is cooling provided via the main radiator. Careful driving and maintenance should be enough. By "careful" I would suggest dropping down to a gear that will be held locked rather than straining in a higher gear unlocked.

Towing in 3rd up big hills has seen above 125 C. This is danger territory. The oil will degrade and if left will cause $$$$ damage. We are running two scangauges and monitor both auto temps, water ,volts and a couple of fuel usage.
The cooler has dropped the temps by 25 - 40 deg. Now if you really want the auto to last and save some fuel install a torque converter lockup over ride. This will reduce temps even further and after climbing Cunningham Gap with the camper locked in 3rd (the ecu won't lock in 3rd) keeping the speed limit temp was 85 in both TC and box.
Even without the camper climbing hills like the windy ones near Monteville locked in 3rd is easier and similar to a manual. Makes changes a bit rough thou. I only use the TC lock when climbing in 3rd and when high head winds in 4th. If you are locking in 5th at 100 kph into headwinds keep an eye on water temp. We have seen 96 deg and when dropped to 4th locked back to 89 deg.
We made our own lockup but they can be readily bought.
