  • What Tyres to Buy

    Hi Everyone,
Can you please give me your honest opinions.

Well I am up for a set of new boots for my 120 Grande? I mostly travel on the black stuff, so I want something that is quiet, gives good mileage , but can handle a bit of medium off road. Whats out there and what is your experiences with them?

    Regards Fireblaize

You can stick with the factory tyres. Aired down, they are not too bad offroad. for your use, they give good fuel economy, plenty of people sell them off when they upgrade to new tyres straight off the showroom so you can get them cheap.

          Hi Amts,
yeah you can buy the originals, but the are dearer than other brands. I was thinking of putting Pirrelli Scorpion ATRs on, has any one had any experience with them?

I've had Scorpian ATRs on two vehicles. Very happy. Cheap too. Gone to BFG KO2s. Like them.

$750 for 5 is pretty cheap.

In the same boat, bought my 120 Grande knowing it had shite tyres and now need to bite bullet, considering General Grabber AT2 265-70-17 or Pirelli Scorpion ATR although leaning towards the Generals.

Yokohama Geolander A/TS, 4 for the price of 3.

Heard of people getting 70,000km minumum.

Nitto Grappler 2 are new to Aussie market, and have great reviews overseas.

Both sodl by Bob Jane - I have no affiliation with Bob Jane Tyres!!

I reckon this is the Million Dollar question. Everyone has a different view as to what quiet is.

                    Here's my honest opinion.

Originals are a Highway Terrain tyre, and are fitted as a compromise between comfort, noise, handling and wear. Go to a genuine All Terrain (A/T) such as the D697 and you would expect them to be noisier than a H/T tyre. My hearing is considered to be very sensitive and I CAN detect a slight increase in noise, particularly when the windows are down.

Like I said, noise from tyres is very subjective and opinions will vary immensely.

On the other hand, I installed a set of Chinese GOODRIDE SL369 A/T's on my Santa Fe. Now... this is where I DO notice a significant increase in road noise. With all windows up and radio at normal low level, there is a very slight hum, although from outside it can sound to some like a Mud Terrain coming down the road. I am not overly-concerned about road noise, so long as the tyre does what I want it to do (and what it's supposed to do).

Not an expert on AT tyres but I ran some D697s on a Kluger: good handling, ride and grip but became very noisy on tarmac after about 20,000 (but that seems to be AT's in general). The Michelin Latitude Cross seems to get good reviews as a slight AT step up from standard, but harder to find and probably not for harder AT usage. http://www.michelin.com.au/AU/en/tir...ude-cross.html
I have also found Continental (now incl. General) tyres as being very high quality.

I totally advise Yokohama Geolander AT, very good on wet surfaces, very quiet, and quite impressive off-road.
Untill now 40.000 Kms and still look good.
For sure my next ones are going to be the same

+1 for Pirelli Scorpion ATR. I had Dunlop AT3 initially and thought they were quiet, the Pirelli Scorpion ATR are much quieter again. My only concern is the sidewall "seem to be" less stiffer than the AT3, a little more roll into the corners. Overall quiet and comfortable.

Have to agree, I'm on my second set after getting 90,000 from the first set. I do a lot of highway driving but my vehicle is a Civil site vehicle so it sees plenty of differing off road environments as well as holiday over to Stradbroke and bush camping.
What I really like about the Yokos is the wet weather performance over other brands, they are quiet and still perform in off road. The best bonus is that I get heaps of mileage and my dealer gives free rotation and puncture repair for the life of the tyres.
                              How good is that?
