Thanks for the feedback, I've been telling dealers there's a problem since I bought the car in March this year, all I get from them is " we couldn't replicate the problem, it's all in spec."
    Hopefully will be fixed.

I got the firmware applied earlier in the week. The description on the "Inspection & Report on Transmission" service invoice said:
Transmission changes erratic, Struggles to find gears, flaring at times between gear changes, other times it seems to hold revs high for a long time until it finally changes gear. Excessive shift shock (some numbers ), Calibration file (360X2400).
I went for a quick drive down the freeway and it seemed to change and hold gears a lot smoother. Can't really comment until I go for a longer trip.
Production Date 01/06/15 GXL 2.8. Cheers again Cuda

I'm keen to get this firmware upgrade as mine has all of the same issues, especially around the 60km/hr on light throttle. Is Toyota doing this free as part of warranty?

If your vehicle is still in warranty you can just request the update. Let them know the problems your encountering and they should have no issue doing it.

Well finally got to drive the wifes car this arvo after the update to say I'm disappointed would be an understatement.
Yes the gears change smoother but thats it!!
Doing 100kph in 6th gear t/c is locked up, if you push the accelerator down to 1/4 way it drops out of lock up and revs higher this is even on a down hill run.
Then on up hill (think of a small gentle grade) with a touch over 1/4 throttle slowly going to 110kph will drop to 5th gear.

Yeh I also noticed this at 105km/h haven't been in a 110 zone yet. Did mention to dealership further work needs to be done. I am in the US at the moment so need further investigate when I get back. Incidentally the downhill lower gear is to do with the engine braking programmed into the gearbox. Not quiet sure why you would want this at high speeds.

Big call you make there Hally, would you say that overall you wouldn't have bothered had you have known? Would you say there is more negatives in the update than positives? Or the severity of the negatives out-weighs those of the good bits?

Also, are things like this and the tailshaft bump easily won at dealerships, or do you really have to push the point and somewhat prove that there is an issue? I ask because I am due to go in for my 10,000km next week and I am going to use my experience to determine whether I stay with this dealer or not.
Also, does one need to pay for firmware updates and the like? (car is 2016)

                  Cheers, Will

As said earlier your car is under warranty and therefore firmware update is free. I would suggest explaining to them you are not satisfied with the gearbox behaviour and would like it to be looked at and fixed.

Please also bear in mind when this upgrade is done the gearbox memory is reset so it will behave weirdly until you have driven it sufficiently to have had it learn the way you drive.

I still would get it done as at lower speeds it is better but still shit on the highway.

Booked mine in today (online) for update of firmware, which I included on the service request, young lady from service contacted me a bit later to tell me that it would cost $165 to diagnose the problem? I eventually got through to someone who knew something about it, and have been told that only their 'senior technician' can do the upgrade, and that it will be done under warranty.
This follows several calls from Toyota Australia after I filled in their 'after service survey', telling them I was still unhappy at sloppy changes, and had reported it at the 10,000 and 20,000 services with no satisfactory reply.
The service man told me that if I had the update that I couldn't go back to the old settings. I told him that anything would be better than the poor shifts at present. Here's hoping

Got mine done last week, notice a quick downchange when overtaking, also before when I moved the shifter from auto to manual now it selects 4th gear, whereas before it used to go to 5th. other then that it is better and my fuel economy has improved a fair bit.

My Jan 2016 build has always locked into 4th when moving across to manual/sport, so there may have been a few firmware updates since June'15

Mine was done last week, I don't really notice much difference, but then again I didn't have an issue with it before.. Toyota only did it trying to diagnose another issue..
