    Not sure as to why this is an issue.

    It is a safety feature, your car is more visible with its headlights on. Sounds like you are those people who don't put your lights on when it's pouring rain.

    As for "burning" through headlights faster, that comment is almost as bad as saying to avoid using your headlights as much as possible because it will drain your battery even with the engine running.

    I always run my headlights day or night on my other car, the prado just does it without flicking the switch.

      I don't have a problem of running the headlights. But why Toyota had wired both the headlights and parking lights to run together on the "Off" switch position on GX and GXL? The Manual does not refer to the "parking" lights "on" when the switch is in the "Off" position, only the headlights. Running the parkers in addition to the headlights does not help in improving the safety overall. The Prado models higher than GXL only run one set of LEDs.

        Headlights always on is a SPECIAL feature for GXL, its always on even when the light switch is OFF(like Microsoft uses START to shutdown PC). I didnt realize it at picking up my car, and thought it's faulty :-).
        Just like other owners, I am not comfortable with it, and in fact many road users may think we turn it on by mistake, or we're silly to keep headlights on even in the sunshine daytime, in addition to the burning headlights to reduce its life.
        We may think to replace the headlight system with something like VX DRL system. Anybody know how to do the mod?

            By having the DRL's (headlights 'on' for GXL - LEDs for Kakadu) Toyota get a better ANCAP rating for the vehicle.

            It will be a legal requirement in Aus soon for all new cars to have a version of a LED DRL, or this type of headlights on function as standard.... hence why top model cars have nice DRL's and lower models have headlights 'on'

            It's a European law that was designed for areas that have more foggy or snowy conditions the majority of the time to allow other road users and pedestrians to know that a car was 'on' - for those who don't turn on their headlights in those sorts of conditions. The law is a requirement in the EU, so most manufacturers have a version of them

              Law in Canada too. And probably the parkers are not bright enough on their own to qualify as DRLs. But I prefer the look of the LEDs in the VX and Kakadu, which pushed me to the higher model. Most expensive DRLs in Australia if I think of it like that, but the leather and electrics are nice too.
