I installed a Uniden 8080S and a twin USB socket off a shutdown timer which is run directly from the battery. I have it set for about 3 hours but you can adjust it to turn off from 12 minutes to 18 hours so it stays on after you turn the vehicle off but it will shut off after the predetermined time or if the voltage drops too low. So I installed my CB yesterday, and when I went looking for a 12v power supply, I realized I was going to have to get the whole centre console apart to get access to hard wire it in (and I don't have the time or inclination right now to do that). For a temporary job, I've wired it to a 12V cigarette lighter plug and just run it under the passenger seat and plugged it into the rear socket. The CB itself has been attached to the side of the centre console with a large piece of adhesive Velcro, so when I;m not using it (i.e. most of the time when I'm around town) I can simply unplug, unvelcro and take it out. Part of the problem withe the pre-facelift 150 series GXL dash I've notices is that there's really no room to mount the CB unless one replaces the reversing camera unit with an aftermarket or one fits a roof-mounted storage with room for the CB in it...

That's why I went for the Uniden UHF so the base unit is inside the dash and I got an RJ45 pass through that replaces one of the blank buttons in the centre console. Now I just plug in the handset (which has all the controls and speaker/mic) when I need it and unplug it when I don't. The RJ45 came from AMTS in Adelaide for about $20 and looks really neat.

Im in the same situation with a brand new 2016 GXL and a Uniden 8080S ready to be installed. My research so far is there is no one correct way to install as its all based on how you use your vehicle.

I plan on going to some really remote locations in WA so I'm leaning towards an install through a seperate baintech fusebox and to AUX 2nd deep cycle battery for the sole reason if in an emergency the radio can still work independant of key fob/cranking battery flat/car locked or similar.

I reckon, off a relay powered by Aux battery but switched by accessory circuit, with an manual override switch.
