  • Do you need extended swaybar links with B46-1478LT rear shocks?

Still doing some research on a 2" lift. I've looked at the Billy B46-1478LT shock (landcruiser shock, 15mm longer open length then Billy 24-217897). Some have mentioned having extended swaybar links and brake lines to accommodate for the extra travel.
    Is this necessary?

Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Yes definitely on the sway bar links. Touch and go with the brake lines.

        Hey,

You'll definitely need longer links, 30mm maximum extension. Anything longer and you run the risk of binding the link on the lower trailing arm at full articulation.

As you're on the Gold Coast, give John at Zordos a call, he can help you out with both the 1478LT and the Roadsafe version of the links that red hilux showed in the ebay link above.

If you drop the rear diff horizontally to full droop, the rear brakelines can be at full stretch in the 610-615mm range on the 120 series. You can muck around bending brackets to try and avoid stretching them, but the safer option is to put in stainless braided lines which are longer than oem. Local brakes shop should be able to do this for you.

You'll have some nice flex in the rear with the 1478LT!

          ...forgot to say if you use the links with heim joints, you should use rubber boots to keep dirt/dust etc. out of them. Link to the boots on ebay is in post #6 in this thread;

            Thanks Whitney,

I have been in communication with Zordo already (it was him that recommended the longer shocks). If and when it happens he'll be my man to get it all sorted out.

Since its raining here and the prado outside what actually happens if you don't extend the links?

                The swaybar links may break.

...and if they don't bend/shear/pop a ball joint, then there's a chance you'll snap the swaybar.

The purpose of lengthening the swaybar links is to ensure the rear suspension tops out/hangs/droops on the shocks rather than the swaybar. The shocks are designed to be topped out, the swaybar isn't.

Extended swaybar links are cheap insurance to avoid loading up and potentially damaging your links or swaybar.

The limit of 30mm extension on the links is directly additive to the oem swaybar binding length of 615mm, so 645mm. This allows you to run a rear shock with open length up to 640mm (keeping a 5mm safety margin for bush compression/expansion) or so if you keep the swaybar in.

                      Hey,

Superior charge around twice as much for extended brake lines compared to getting them made up by your local brakes shop!
