  • Biggest 265/70R16 MT?

Hey all, about to upgrade the BFG A/Ts on the Prado to something more aggressive and was always going to get KM2s but have started thinking of other options.

A mate just bought a set of Micky Thompson ATZ P3s and when parked side by side his appear to be a physically larger tyre although their the same size on the sidewall. My biggest hold up with the Prado has been ground clearance so I was going to try and find a taller tyre if I can without going to a 285.

Anyone have any input? Thinking the MTZ P3s might be an option.

    Hi,

I went with the General Grabber SRL.
Like the P3's they are physically larger although still 265's.
Did Cape York and they did the road and off road beautifully. When at 18psi the other guys thought I was running more psi as the side wall didn't bag put much but I got the longer footprint.

    my 2 cents worth

People thought I was running 285

16" rim on a 120 at the standard offset will not fit on the front.

My bad. No idea why I said 16", was going to stick with the factory 17" alloys unless there's a better option for slightly more offset?

I got BFG KM2's on the prado and did the cape in them. Fantastic Tyre, no regrets but it is not a daily driver.
I had MT ATZ's on previously and the KM2 are much better in every way IMHO.

            Cheers

Found this article today while looking for the best option of getting a bigger tyre on the 120.

"We are regularly asked what size tyres and rims we are running on our KZJ120 (2003 Toyota Prado TD GX). The answer is 285/75/16 Tyres on 16x8 Roh Trak II rims.

Pic showing the result of grinding the top of the Brake Caliper on a kzj120 2003 Toyota Prado Being released with 17” rims, the front brakes on a standard Prado will not fit a 16” Rim. This unfortunately leaves a selected range of aftermarket rims and tyre combinations. The also adds to the cost of the tyres, with the 17” variety being uncommon you tend to pay a premium.

We decided to investigate whether it was possible to fit a 16” rim, looking at where the Calliper hits the rim. It was soon discovered after trying to fit a Toyota Prado 16x7 GXL rim, Toyota 80 Series 16x8 and an ROH Trak II 16x8 that there were 2 lumps of casting on the callipers that slightly hit the rim.

Investigating these casting lumps we found they were just excess steel used in the casting process, not providing any structural or mechanical effect on the brake callipers function. We decided that these could be safely removed to allow the 16” rims to be fitted with no adverse effect on the vehicle. A short 5 minute session on the Angle grinder quickly removed 2-3 mm of the steel from both the top and bottom of the calliper. Fitting the 16x8 Roh Trak II, we found there was now 2-3 mm of clearance and the rim fit well. After some 10,000kms we have found no adverse effect from this modification. We have since been advised that Toyota Dealerships also conduct a similar modification to allow for aftermarket Alloy wheels to be fitted to New Vehicles.

The was a post on here, actually been a few, but one in particular killed the piston seals while grinding. Excess material it may be but I wouldn't.

That lcool article was written quite a while back when 17" tyres may not be as prevalent as now. There are plenty of choices now including good quality ones at a very good price.
