Brake pedal vibration

Hey there,

I am the very proud owner of a new Prado Kakadu. Very happy with the vehicle so far but have noticed that sometimes on pressing the brake pedal there can be a vibration for a second or so. This can occur when the car is standing still and you push down on the brake pedal or if the car is moving. It also happens almost as soon as you depress the pedal.

I did not notice this in any of the vehicles we test drove, and there were a couple before we finally decided to buy.

Hey there everyone,

I'm guessing no one out there has this problem. Toyota says it's a known issue but aren't going to do anything saying it is normal and common. We test drove a Kakadu today and had the same thing but not as pronounced. The issue apparently with the brake pump.

If anyone has comments please feel free to let me know.

I don't know your 150 model as I'm a proud 95 series owner but this "normal" crap doesn't sound right at all to me. Normally you shouldn't have any vibration from your brake pedal, and if you do, it suggests a warped disc, stuck caliper piston or the like. But the standing still comment has confused me. I would get this checked out with a second opinion.

Its not the vibration of the ABS is it? Sometimes, when you touch the pedal suddenly when driving, you get a buzz type vibration through the pedal. If you are on a hill and roll back, the decent control also kicks in which buzzes and vibrates. Is this what you mean by any chance or is it different? Is it a shudder rather than a vibration?

I wonder if what you are felling is the hill start function where is the car is on an incline and the brakes are pulsing which you can feel through the pedal?

If your touching the pedal "suddenly" it's either the ABS kicking in. Or the brake assist which deciphers a certain speed and speed/force of brake application. It then assists. Which in some cases means puts the brakes on so hard it is un-nerving.
If on a slope it would be the hill assist which also pulses and makes some light chattery sounds.

Thank you so much fo the replies.

As an update we took it to a different dealer to get a second opinion and they said it is normal and common in Kakadus. The technition raised the bonnet and showed us the vibrating pump or actuator or whatever it was again (a component at the back left hand corner of the engine bay, beside the break fluid container, sorry not a mechanical person here) while he pressed his foot on the break pedal. We have driven other new Prado's and they can do the same kind of thing. You can reliably get it to happen if you're standing still with your foot on the break enough to stop the car rolling, then press down harder. It sometimes will happen only on the second press.

We are thinking of giving it a bit longer to see if it continues to happens, keep on reporting it as something wrong, maybe someday they will have a pump that doesn't vibrate.

If anybody else has the same thing please let me know, I will keep you all updated. We are going to ask if it can be fixed. It's more annoying than anything but something that does take away a little of the pleasure of driving.
