  • Prado suspension

Waiting on my j90 Prado. Trying to find leveling kits or lift kits but not seeing much out there. Currently in Japan so I have been looking online. Does anyone know where or what kind of lifts are put there? Also if the Prado platform is the same as a 4runner? Found one online for about $500 with springs shocks and struts for a 2 inch lift... Not sure what everyone else uses.

Yes platform is the same... Although the prado is much stronger with a lot more beefing up
All the chassis components are interchangeable

In oz prados are plentiful so theres lots of stuff available
        I put 2" dobinsons in
Very little 4runner stuff here as they were only imports and were too expensive so not many ppl bought them

It's very similar platform, some gear can be used... but keep in mind 4runners are lighter. Coils which might lift a 4runner 3" may only lift a 5 door Prado 2". Shocks may also be made to a softer rate.

G'day Glen, you may be able to answer this question for me.
I have a 95 series petrol model and have bought a 2inch kit comprising HD Dobinson coils, Bilstein shocks and a Coilrite airbag kit.
I also got new tophats for the struts. After some research I decided to add 25mm spacer blocks to the front struts with a 30mm poly spacer for the rear coils.
This 25mm spacer allows a projected 37mm lift approx to the front in addition to the 40mm the coils will provide.
I was told by the mechanic who is going to fit this kit that the spacers for the front will add untold stress to the front CV's as well as bind everything up and cause more problems than good. He rang around for a diff drop kit on my request and was informed by a suspension specialist that a diff drop kit is not available for the 90 series Prado's. Even though this same supplier sells the same type of spacer in their range for 90/95 series Prado's.

I'd like to hear your view on this and is what they say correct. Or can these spacers be fitted and a diff drop kit actually does exist for the 90/95 series.

            Thanks
            Jim

The spacers you speak of are usually installed by people who are adding them to the factory standard suspension. You need to match the height of the lift to the open/closed lengths of the shocks. Otherwise you will damage the shocks prematurely. i.e. too much lift and you won't get enough down travel (i.e. droop) so the shocks will top out more frequently.

Yes there certainly is diff drops for 90 series although they are not the big 4" 'drop bracket' type ones you may see on some Hiluxs. They simply lower the front diff with spacers, improving CV angles. They're available internationally for 3rd gen 4runners and I sell them locally on ebay or my Rhythm Offroad site.

As for spacers it depends on where they are positioned. I'd consider small 5-10mm spacers inside the coilover as safe as it basically just increases coil strength. Spacers on top of the coilover assembly are risky as they reposition the entire coilover assembly down, by comparison to the bump stops. This means under heavy compression the shock may reach it's limit before the bump stop does.

An alternative option would be to run heavier duty or longer coils. If the most HD 90 coil is not suitable, the next option is soft rated 120 coils. They can easily achieve 3" of lift.
